Ha. Did You See...

I'd be great it we sent in a response to that...just saying how much ENWorld loves Dragon...then get tons of our names on it. Not like it'd be printed, but it'd be fun! :)

I think each EN Worlder should go to their local Hallmark store, each buy one of those giant-sized cards (14" x 24" or so--some mushy "I love you" card), and send it in to Dragon.

Imagine dozens (hundreds? thousands?) of over-sized cards arriving at Pazio--surely that would warrant a picture of all the cards, if nothing else. :D

Now, THIS I really like!

Wow. Well, you know what they say - no publicity is bad publicity.

I can't get Dragon here, so if someone would be willing to type that letter and the respose out, I'd be most grateful. There's a free community supporter account in it for you! :)

Here it is: Quoted from Dragon 311, p10.

Quibbling Somebodies

I would like to take this opportunity to send all of you that are working on my favorite magazines a note telling you all to keep up the good work. It must be very difficult to work with the constant annoying buzz of Internet geeks pontificating about your horrible transgressions in magazine creation! Seriously, I feel for you. I was surfing EN World this morning when I stumbled upon the message board update regarding a post by Erik Mona. Now I rarely read message boards, because I find that they are mostly a bunch of nobodies quibbling incessantly over nothing, but I do check them out when written by someone from the industry. I was absolutely shocked when I read the posts regarding your magazines! These people had nothing nice to say about anything. The way I see it is if they don't like the magazines, they should cancel their subscriptions. Oh, wait ... none of them had subscriptions. In fact, a bunch of them say they think the magazines suck because they just look at them in the store and don't buy them. That is obviously a great way to judge the content of a magazine! I read your magazines just about from cover to cover and always find great information. Even if an article, adventure, or Mini-Game isn't my personal taste. I always find something I can put to good use in my games.

Did you note that I said games? Yes, I DM two different games a week. I actually play the game that so many of these message board geeks rip apart but don't actually play!

Keep up the good work, and know that at least one person you are writing for each month is going to really enjoy what you work so hard to create.

Jeffrey J Bickler, Brick, NJ

And Dragon's Reply:

We're glad you love the magazines Jeffrey. Thanks for the praise and for being such a faithful reader.

You're lucky to play so regularly. Finding time to play and people to play with can be hard. For a lot of folks, Dragon and the message boards are their only connection to their favorite hobby, and we can't fault them for that.

We do pay attention to Internet message boards. Although not always positive, the feedback we find there is sometimes useful in allowing us to understand how to serve different portions of the readership. We know we can't make all of the people happy all of the time, so we shoot for as many as possible and most of the time. Our indicator for that is issue sales, and in a time when most magazines are seeing a 20% drop, Dragon is trending up.

That makes us very happy, but we're always looking for ways to do better. A lot of the criticism about Dragon boils down to people saying what they don't want to see in the magazine. that's good to know, but the magazine can't improve by process of elimination. It's much more useful for readers to tell us the kinds of articles they like and why. the reason behind a favorable opinion about an article gives us the tools we need to evolve and improve with each issue.

If you know of something we don't have in the magazine that you'd like to see, or things you've liked and you'd like to see more of, send an email to scalemail@paizo.com to let us know what they are and why. Until then see you on the message boards.

Thanks, physics_ninja! I'll give you a Community Supporter account as soon as I finish typing this post.

The chap in question is evidently not very familiar with EN World; this we can see from the various factual errors he has made. I'm also suprised that Dragon permits people to insult others in that way - I always assumed it had rules similar to those we had here. Still, his view of us is evidently a misconception (and where did he get the idea that none of us actually play D&D?)

I see no evidence that we (in general) dislike Dragon. I see a lot of threads discussing the magazine, and I don't think we'd even bother if we didn't care about it. I know that many, many people here regularly buy (or subscribe to) Dragon.

I think the idea of a community response letter to Dragon is a fantastic idea! I don't know whether they'd print it or not, but it is certainly something worth doing. I'm not sure how we should go about this - and ideas?

I would say that most of the threads about Dragon do tend to be more about bashing then objectivity.

I don't see in there were it mentions ENWorld by name though, so I wouldn't get too uptight.

First word in the 4th line of the above letter.

You're right, it's no big deal. but it might be nice to publicly express our support of the magazine. As I said, we wouldn't criticise if we didn't care.

Hmm...sounds like Jeffrey Bickler knows what EN World is all about, posting complaints about a magazine to a game we don't play.
Maybe someone should send him a fake ENnie.

Ah well. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Let them be kings of their world.

That giant Hallmark "I love you" card doesn't sound like a bad idea. :)

Cheers!

Yeah, I really like it...hmm...any really good writers? I'm thinking it should be something really sappy and fun. This is definatly a great idea, and even if they DON'T print it, the people at Paizo get a nice letter.
