Some clarifications:
A half-dragon troll will have 6d10 + Con base Hit Dice (6d8 troll, with each die raised one step from the half-dragon template), and be either ECL +(8+3=) 11 using the DMG, +(11+3=)14 using the FRCS errata, or +(11+4=)15 using the ECLs in Dragon 293.
IMHO, half-dragon is definitely worth +4 ECL. Trolls probably aren't quite worth +11, but are definitely a better buy than ECL +8 would indicate; I'd put trolls at ECL +9 to be fair. So IMC, this character would be a 13th-level character minimum. At these levels, you're talking about foes who can use disintegrate, destruction, forcecage, prismatic spray, or any number of means that will destroy or incapacitate this character. As others have pointed out, this character is simply hard to actually KILL, because it's difficult to do normal damage to him. A hold monster spell will take him out long enough for foes to remove his items, at which point someone probably will think to use an acid attack against him.
