"Half damage from slashing attacks"--what is halved?

First Post
Skeletons (for instance) take 1/2 damage from slashing attacks. What gets halved?

Lets say we have a fighter with a greatsword and 18 STR. That means 2d6+6. Lets say he has Weapon Specialization and the sword is +1. That makes it 2d6+9.

So if he attacks a skeleton, is it (2d6 / 2) + 9 or is it (2d6+9)/2 ? (Or something else?)

Now, let's take a creature that takes half-damage from non-bludgeoning who isn't immune to criticals. (Can't be bothered looking for one, so let's call this hypothetical... or assume there's a special ability of the wielder or the weapon that lets him crit skeletons.)

A morningstar does bludgeoning and piercing damage, so it should do full damage.

Let's say, however, that we make the morningstar keen, and confirm a crit from a natural 19.

Is the extra damage from the critical B&P, or only P damage? Since keen can only apply to Piercing or Slashing weapons, and the attack was only a crit because of the keen effect...

All of it gets halved, by the rules: All damage done of that sort is considered to be "slashing" damage. It's generally not worth the effort to seperate out exactly how much of that damage is "slashing damage" inflicted because the object is bladed, and how much of it is just blunt-force trauma from being swung really hard. So the rules simply don't bother.

In your example I believe it is all slashing damage, and all halved.

On the other hand, if you added damage from, say, a flaming, holy/unholy (I think) or bane (I think) weapon, that die of damage would not be halved, because they add damage that is expressly not slashing damage (At least flaming. The others I'm guessing at, 'cause I don't have 3.0 in front of me).

I agree that the DR version works better, however.

I thougt they got rid of the Skelly half/slashing in 3.5 and made it 5/blunt. Did they forget to rememove the Half/Shashing?

No.

But notice the little "3.0" tag on the original post :)
