Half Fiend Hit Dice Question (My players stay out!)

Raflar

First Post
I have a 1st level Wizard that is Half Fiend / Half Human. The ECL=5 (1 wizard + 4 Half Fiend) What Hit Dice would I be.. the Monster Manual SRD (don't own the book yet) doesn't give any other than the base creature.. (unless I'm blind)..

That would mean my character would have only 1d4 hp (+con bonus if any)????

I realize half-fiends have quite a boost but at 5th level one hit and he's toasted!!!!

Please verify or clarify... thank you.. :)

edit. title change to keep players out.

Correct, you have 1d4 hit points, + Con bonus.

Try not to get hit.

Thanks... that's what I thought... good thing I have DR 5 / magic ..... I will definitely keep a few handy scrolls of Mage Armour, Shield and Protection from ****... :)

Yes. Therefore the advice is: Have a number of HD equal to at least half your ECL. So half-fiend isn't a good choice at 5th level. It gets interesting at 8th level.

If you want to play a half-fiend from early on (maybe even from 1st level), create a template class and use that. I suggest starting with 1 level in your normal class (that would be wizard), but already be a native outsider with wings (but the wings are nonfunctional). Then alternate template levels (this template class will have 4 levels) and class levels.

Wiz1
Wiz1/Half-Fiend 1
Wiz2/HF1
Wiz2/HF2

and so on, till you are Wiz4/HF4 at 8th level. I suggest that the intelligence bonuses you get later (half-fiends have +4 int) grant skill points retroactively (since as half-fiend wiz 1 on lv 5, you'd get all extra skill points for the int).

Thanks. Actually that helps alot. And it will add more to the story... The Human was originally a Wizard/Cleric of Kelemvor but he died and was taken away to the Lower Planes by a servant of Cyric who was really granting him his spells unbeknownst to the wizard in an attempt to corrupt and steal him away.

Long story short, I'm using the storyline of Cyric trying to get back the Death Portfolio from Kelemvor by stealing all his priests. But the wizard/cleric dies at 4th level and gets taken away by a fiendish servant of Cyric. Wizard questioned but will not bow to the will of Cyric so evil god that he is transforms him into a fiend. Mystra intercedes and transports him back to the Prime Material. (Since she hates Cyric and 'was' a former lover of Kelemvor (pre-godhood))

Anyway, I like the idea of having him slowly transform turning into the monster he was trained to hunt down.... the role playing aspect will be fantastic as another player is a priest of Hoar (Vengeance) and you know the wizard will want retribution on Cyric...

* I should probably point out that while I am the DM I'm also playing this character as a PC (or rather a main NPC in the PCs group)... it helps when I need to nudge the players in a certain direction without tipping my hand too much. Besides it's the only way I ever get to play anymore.. DM Eternal... :)

That sounds just like one of Cyrics plots (although I thought he was cured of his madness) :D Well good luck stealing all priests of a greater Deity. It might take a while :)
