Hamunaptra: Egyptian Adventures

There is one thing, almost painfully, missing. Coming Forth by Day. The most famous book from ancient Egypt.

Yep! The Egyptian "Bible", basically... crossed with a bit of Dante... not a book that just priests had, a book that normal people owned too... their description of what happens in the afterlife, and what you have to do to avoid going to the Bad Place or getting eaten by the Eater of the Dead, that crocodile-headed thing named Ammit....

(...which I hope Hamunaptra included stats for, BTW... ;) )

Actually, here's a question for Mouseferatu:

How much similarity (if any) does HAMUNAPTRA have to the TESTAMENT Egyptian section? I assume it's really, really different, but I was wondering if the "Khery-Heb" class exists in HAMUNAPTRA, for instance.

I can't wait to get the book!

I have been running an Egyptian themed game for some time and have really been looking forward to Hamunaptra. Up until now, I have been raiding the local library for cultural, architectural, and mythical references. While not a real honest to God scholar of Egypt, I think I have built a pretty solid picture in my mind of what Ancient Egypt was like.

The first thing I noted when reading Hamunaptra's history section was how effectively they 'massaged' the real Egypt's history to make it fit the fantastic setting. They did an amazing job. Not only was it very well written, but the details mirror reality close enough that all the research I did in the library is still just as applicable.

As far as comparisons to Testament go, it's quite different. There is room for a bit of 'cross pollination' but the Khemti as described in Hamunaptra and the Egypt as described in Testament are wholly different places. Especially when you consider that in Testament, the available PC races is drastically limited.

I really like how they have taken the classes and races from the PHB and changed them just a bit. They are still recognizable, but the flavor is a little different.

I wish that it hadn't been quite so spendy, though. Forty bucks is a lot of money.

Thanks! Glad you're digging it. :)

Not for a boxed set with three books and a full-color, fold-out map. In the old days, yeah, but for a verge-of-2005 release, it's downright reasonable. ;)

Glad to hear you all are looking forward to H:EA as much as I am. Also, keep an eye on the downloads section at ENworld. I will be uploading a pdf file or two to supplement the release of Hamunaptra.

If I may ask (as I'm away from home for Thanksgiving) and don't have my copy yet, what treatment do lycanthropes get in H:EA? Also, are there any oasis cities modeled after the oases of Western Egypt? (Cause those are what my supplements cover :p )

Dang it, I don't want egyptian dwarves and elves. I want dog and cat headed PC races.

Will be buying it anyway. I'm trying to persuade my ancient Egypt loving friend to run a Egyptian themed D&D game.

Well, there is a "dog-headed" race, after a fashion. :D

As for cats, I'm afraid you're out of luck (and no worse off for it, IMHO). :)

Indeed. Essentially, the gnolls of Hamunaptra are "jackalfolk," to use the current terminology. Can't get more dog-headed than that. ;)

As for cat-headed...

Honestly? C.A. and I both felt that had been done to death. (Waits for the hate mail. ;)) If you really want them, however, it's simplicity itself to import them from any setting in which they exist (I think Forgotten Realms has them, and I know the Scarred Lands continent of Termana does). Just port 'em over, rename them something to do with Bast, and maybe tweak a few racial abilities.

BTW, need to correct something I said earlier. Apparently, C.A. did write more than Steve and me combined.
