Happy "Turkey" Day (OT)

Does anyone else find it rather disturbing that around Thanksgiving time we are bombarded with pictures of cutesy little dancing turkeys, or little beanie babies of cute little turkeys? I think the Turkey's are behind this. I think somewhere, there is an elite underground network of super turkeys who are trying to make we, the people, feel bad about eating them. Everywhere you look there are also turkey's such as this one :

The turkeys are revolting against us. Between all the "just a wee bit too cute" turkey tchotchkes & the fact that instead of Thanksgiving after Halloween, we jump immediately into Christmas time at the mall, before we know it, this could be an all out battle between the Thanksgiving Celebrators and what shall henceforth be called the "Gobbling Gladiators".

Be afraid...Be very afraid...

"No one expects the Turkey Inquisition!"

But until then...

And then they make animated specials about the part where, with the maize and the big, big belt buckles. They don't show you the next scene, where all the bison die and squanto takes a musket ball in the stomach.

BUFFY: Ok. Now, for some of that, you were channeling your mother?

WILLOW: Well, yeah, sort of. That's why she doesn't celebrate thanksgiving or columbus day-- You know, the destruction of the indigenous peoples. I know it sounds a little overwrought, but really, she's...She's right.

BUFFY: Yeah. I guess I never really thought about it that way. With mom at aunt darlene's this year, I'm not getting a thanksgiving. Maybe it's just as well.

ANYA: Well, I think that's a shame. I love a ritual sacrifice.

BUFFY: It's not really a one of those.

ANYA: To commemorate a past event, you kill and eat an animal. It's a ritual sacrifice, with pie.

True Story Time!

A buddy of mine was studying 15th century Chinese history. In order to work towards his Master's degree, he spent a year in Taiwan to take an intensive Classical Reading course.

Now my buddy, classical American that he was, knew that some of the time over there would be rough for him. He got through September and October just fine, but November hit and he grew vastly homesick -- he came from a large extended family and T-Day was a real big deal. Now here he was far away and in a land that did not celebrate the holiday. He was glum.

A couple friends found that a restaurant in Taichung (sp?) City was holding an "American Holiday Dinner" special on Thanksgiving and they convinced my buddy to go along. There he was faced with (spelling accurate) "Full Americaan Turcey Diner". What it turned out to be was (I kid you not) turkey lunch meat covered with brown bean gravy. Needless to say, my buddy was heartbroken.

Well, next morning, feeling lost and forlorn, he was woken at the dorm by a fellow from South Africa. "Wake up! We have Thanksgiving leftovers!" My buddy was in the "Once bitten, twice shy" mode, but followed the fellow down to the common room. What did he see? Real turkey, cranberry sauce, baked yams, pumpkin pie, all the fixings, even mayonnaise for sandwiches!

"But your from South Africa! How do you know about all this?"

"Well, I spent time in Japan, didn't I?"

"What does Japan have to do with it?"

"Well, you Yanks occupied, didn't you? A lot of folks there picked up on the holly!"

"But we're in Taiwan!"

"Yeah, but I know the English folks who run the pub, don't I?"

"Don't tell me..."

"Yep, they spent time in Japan, too."

So, leave it to an American in a Chinese city to find a South African and some Brits who spent time in Japan to get the makings for an American holiday.

If that isn't international cooperation, what is?
