Hardback or softback?

Hardback, nearly always. They look better, they hold up longer, and I just like the way they feel in my hands. An exception would be something with content designed to be photocopied, such as floor plans or maps. In that case, soft cover is easier to use.
 

Option 3: PDF/Electronic.

I prefer to only print out the three or four monsters I need rather than carting along a whole book, softcover or hardcover.

I'm a hardbnound kinda guy, myself. In fact, I prefer hardbound for practically everything except modules (and if the module is large enough, I'll accept it then, too).

Of course, the binding needs to be strong. Not like, say, Champions 4th Edition.
