I'm just glad that the fifth book is finally being released!! I finally set aside my eye-rolling over the series and read the first book over the Winter holidays, and to my surprise, I loved it! I devoured the next three books in as many days, and want more!

Of course, I'm despairing of how long it will take book 5 to be released in softcover format, but at least I'll be back in America to read it in the bookstore...I'm one of those awful customers who sits down with the book, reads all of it there in the store, and then doesn't buy it. :D I got a few dirty looks when I did that with Dragons of a Vanished Moon.

And this is a problem why? :D

Because it might also read like the Bible. It might be an indicator that her editor is no longer willing or able to do his job and tell Rowling to cut when she needs to?

Longer might be better. We shall see.

I think this is a serious problem with many modern popular writers. They get big enough and rich enough that editors have trouble cutting out the chaff from their books. Just look at Clive Cussler. His early Dirk Pitt books clocked in at roughly 300-400 pages, while his later books are roughly twice that. Unfortunately, those books aren't necessarily twice as good, they're just twice as long. Tom Clancy is another popular offender in this regard, and I find Anne Rice to be horrible in this aspect. I stopped reading her just because so much of her books read like filler instead of story.

This is not to say that long novels can't be justified in their length, but it makes you wonder when every book seems to tack on an extra 50 to 100 (or more) pages to the last one. Sometimes I wonder if there is some sort of secret prize for the most unnecessarily long novel.

True enough, I'm just thinking that Robert Jordan has never had an editor willing to make those cuts

anyways, enough robert jordan bitterness, yay with the new books!!!

The news release is less than 24 hours old, and already Amazon.com has annouced that the book has made the #1 best-sellers list.

On pre-orders alone, I'm assuming, since the book won't be released until June 21.
