Harry Potter Casting News

Hot off the wire this morning: Michael Gambon has been selected as the new Dumbledore, replacing the late, great Richard Harris. The studio also confirmed that Gary Oldman will play Sirius Black(!).

Michael Gambon's a good actor, he should be able to pull this off. I saw him play Lyndon Johnson in HBO's Path to War last year, and was blown away. I heard good things about him in Gosford Park, and I'll have to go back to Sleepy Hollow to see which character he played.

*Minor spoilers for the three of you who haven't read the books*

And as for Gary Oldman, all I have to say is: excellent. Loved his body of work ever since Sid and Nancy. He plays such a great villain, it's almost a walk in the park to get the dark side of Sirius, but he has a tender, more human side as well that doesn't get cast as much, that I think will do Sirius justice.

As a bit of trivia (that may be a myth, but I don't think so): Richard Harris didn't want to be in the Harry Potter movies at all, but his granddaughter told him she'd never speak to him again if he didn't take the part of Dumbledore.

It's a good thing his granddaughter was so stubborn, he played that part really well.

Similar deal with Viggo Mortenson. His son basically told him he HAD to play Aragorn. The rest, as they say, is history.
