Harry Potter d20 Please PEACH

Imbasel

First Post
I made a harry potter d20 game with the help of others and wanted to share it here.

https://sites.google.com/site/harrypotterd20/

Here is the site that I have done most of the work on in terms of discussion and ideas presented. Harry Potter D20 Heavy 3.5 Varient Help Needed PEACH - Giant in the Playground Forums

Please tell me what you guys think. Also, I know that some people consider d20 to not be the best system for that. I understand and respect your opinion. However, I am looking for feedback based off of my use of the d20 system and the whole harry potter d20 in general and not what may or may not be a better way to run it.

The problem with an IP like HP is that you're trying to shoehorn it into a predefined system when it should be built from the ground up using its own. I would also like to point out that level progression is fine, but should be limited to a number of levels related to years of school, so for HP it would be seven levels. Do away with the XP and leave it up to the GM to decide when the characters leave for end of school year and then return for the start of a new year. You may want to take a look at E6 or E8 and try modifying one of them if you really want to keep the d20 system as they would give you a close level range that matches the curriculum of Hogwarts.

I suppose my main problem was that I felt that d20 was the system I was most comfortable with when I started this project. I know it's not perfect, but for right now it's what I have and am comfortable with. I do agree that leveling is more on an as case basis.

When it comes to content of the site what do you think?

I like the presentation you have and you seem to cover the important stuff that most fans will want. Without tearing into it a lot, it looks solid from what I looked at and it's good that you have sought help in designing it. A better source of feedback though will be actual game play. Which if you're just now making it widely known will take some time.

Is the plan to keep it strictly web based or will there be a PDF?

Currently gameplay feedback has been not as much as I was hoping. A few games have been run and brought to my attention online. However, they have tended to fizzle away. One of them I just started to one and that seems to be going well, so time will tell what needs to be changed. I have a few emails from people saying that they've played tested it with friends and said they've liked it. However, with more information which I've asked for I have nothing to go on. What I really need is for someone to go home play a session with people and post back with feedback.

Currently it is web based and a pdf is coming eventually. However, I have many hours worth of editing to do and I know I need a fair number of more spell, potions, and far far more creatures before I can do so.

My critique:

If you're going to use a vile acronym like PEACH, you must refrain from putting "please" in front of it. If you absolutely must do this, be sure to file for the proper paperwork from the Department of Redundancy Department.

Actual critique from a 2 minute glance by someone who isn't particularly fond of Harry Potter:

Progression of the base class seems a little slow, but that's not necessarily a problem. Just be sure that all the PrCs are in line with it.

Not all wizards start at Hogwarts, so the House ability doesn't make sense for all characters.

You need more base classes to keep things interesting. A class that focuses on knowledge more than casting might be useful, or a class specifically for non magic types. You could possibly create monster class progressions too (for werewolves, centaurs, etc).

Spells need a bit of fine tuning to get them to a "publishable" quality, but are probably good enough for friendly games and playtesting.

Overall, it's looks a little rough around the edges but appears to have a solid foundation.
