Has anybody tried gaming outdoors?

First Post
I've heard of people doing this (getting their gear, going for a walk in the woods, and camping out/gaming), and am thinking of doing it myself this spring/summer/fall. Definitely opens itself up to some live-action roleplaying, and I would think that it would be really cool.

Anybody tried this before? What was it like? Any tips?

Hehe, when I was 12 or 13, my mom kicked me and my buddies out of the house, to get some fresh air. So we gamed on the patio...

Just make sure you bring stuff to use as paperweights...

Well, I've never gotten into LARP, but I have gamed outside a lot. a few years ago, another goup I lplayed with would often go to the park and play. We usually started about 2 in the afternoon and played into the night. We brought lamps with us to see when it got dark.

It is a nice change of pace. Especially if there are a lot of smokers in your group. Nothing beats fresh air!!!

It can be nice and if you have a notebook computer that makes it better instead of having hundreds of pages of paper blowing away in the wind. People can spread out and enjoy the sun, and packing a picnic lunch with many snacks makes it a great day. But beware the win, that cannot be said enough.

I've gamed on patios and decks, on picnic blankets, in the back of a van, on a huge bed, in separate easy chairs, on the floor, in the grass, around a campfire, and almost any other feasible or non- location to think of. I say go for it. Gaming outdoors on a warm summer day with a few pewter mugs and a card table or blanket is a pleasant change from the stuffy indoors.

Moreover, it's a great way to set up mood. If you're looking to create a more lighthearted mood or natural setting that session, then it'd be preferable to game outside.

Just make sure the neighbors don't see you...hehe.

looks out at the 30+ centemeters of snow outside his window.

Nope not recently. I have though, it can be a lot of fun. I live within spitting distance of a provincial park and we have gone down there a few times to play. Then there is always the patio. Hell there was one time I was backcountry snowboarding and we were basically snowed into this old hunting lodge called Weeler Hut. We got board of playing hearts and we happened to notice that on the bookshelf was the first ed PHB DMG and MM... Got about 15 people playing by the end of the night, includeing this one old hermet guy who I was convinced at the start of the night couldn't read.

Check out Stephen O'Sullivan's SHERPA RPG (http://www.io.com/~sos/rpg/s2.html) - it's "A role-playing game to play while hiking in the mountains, strolling in a park, walking on the beach, sitting by a pool or lake, floating down a river on a raft, as a passenger in a car or space shuttle, waiting in a long line, etc."

Hey, Fenrir, I took the word "game" out of your post, and it's kinda funny if you have to fill in the blank. :D
