Has anybody tried gaming outdoors?

On a beautiful summer day, I hate being inside gaming when it's so nice out. As a result, we spent most games last summer out on the back deck, gaming in the open air. So long as there's no wind and not many mosquitos, it's just wonderful!

You also have to worry about squirrels - they like to steal your dice (apparently under the impression they are nuts).

But wind is the main difficulty.

In Arizona you can only get away with gaming outside during the spring, or at night.

Out here, "nice summer days" range from "It burns!" to "the dice are melting in my hand."

Check out Stephen O'Sullivan's SHERPA RPG (http://www.io.com/~sos/rpg/s2.html) - it's "A role-playing game to play while hiking in the mountains, strolling in a park, walking on the beach, sitting by a pool or lake, floating down a river on a raft, as a passenger in a car or space shuttle, waiting in a long line, etc."

Good game. I second the recomendation.

I haven't really played under the sky, but found something even better.

A couple of years ago I went deer hunting with a couple of guys I game with. We took all our D&D stuff with us, so after hunting, we set up a large table inside my tent (it's pretty big) and played for hours using lanterns for light and propane heaters. It was great because there are no distractions, you play for a few hours, stop and cook a meal, and play some more, go on a hike, play some more, etc.

This past fall we did the same thing, except we didn't really even bother to hunt because we all decided we just wanted to play! So over the course of a weekend we ended up playing something like 20 hours, most of it D&D but we threw in some Star Wars for variety.
