Has the DM fallen from grace?

Nope. I said exactly what I meant. I never said anything about in the middle of combat. All I stated was how useful Detect Magic can be in a situation. If someone jumped the gun and thought combat had already started then that was their fault.

Revisionist history there.

What *actually* happened is FireLance pointed out that if combat started right away (common occurrence when meeting a dragon you might have noticed), then a dragon would likely not be using Detect Magic to be able to tell "what items were magical so was careful not to destroy them" (your words). That's when you started the goalpost moving.

All the dragon needed to know was if there is a presence of magic or not.

That's not what you originally said.

The loss of the DM would be a bad idea no matter how you look at it. I never liked those self adventure books where you had to turn to page so and so if you went left, or page so and so if you went into the cave.

Sure it sucks when you have nobody around to DM or not enough people to play with, but that is what the VTT is supposed to be for.

Re: playing sans a DM - There is an excellent system called Mythic Game Master Emulator that allows for a campaign to be run without a DM. It is a supplement that can be used with virtually any RPG. I use it to augment my DMing as well as for use in my solo campaign. It is a lot of fun! I cannot recommend the system enough.

Actually it is. Sit down at a 4th edition game by yourself or with a group of people without a DM. Now, which one of you controls the monsters?

Who ever starts using those monsters becomes the DM even if it is for just a few moments. Also, whoever controls the monsters has to look at the monster's stats and control them. Now, the whole purpose of the combat is strategy, just like in chess, you can't play by yourself. Well you can certainly try but it defeats the whole purpose.

What about when there are traps that only the DM is supposed to know the location of and you have to look at the grid. After the first time you look at the grid you then know the location of all traps in the room and it spoils the whole thing.

You are just arguing now for the hell of it.

Says the guy cherrypicking examples that support his point of view.

Nobody has said you should take 4e as-is and run it without a DM. Make up your mind, are we talking D&D in general or are we going to get 4e specific here?

From another thread:
We don't play with DM intent when it comes to combat, we just roll the dice.

This thread's title was rather misleading. Ten pages and mostly what's been covered is comparative ease of monster prep and the exact workings of Detect Magic. I was thinking there'd be more on these kids, and how they need to get off of some people's lawns.
