Has the horse left the barn?

Not really sure.

As a fantasy game, 4e doesn't really appeal to me (though that's more for lack of interest than for any philosophical or design reasons!). With some "basic" rules (I hadn't even heard they were coming out with this!), and someone else to DM, I might give it a go. Also, I'd probably be more enthusiastic about 4e in a non-fantasy setting. But either way, at this point I have no plans to seek out a game.

I think the ship has sailed-- but I'm not too proud to hop in a row-boat and chase after it later, either!

Anything that makes 4e stronger I see as a bad thing - I can't wait for it to die.

edit: Not trying to be snarky - I really do hope that 5e is better. 5e might draw me back into the fold; I'd give it a chance. Not so more splatbooks for 4e.

I may take a second look with the Essentials line--I think the right choice of classes, builds, and so forth for those books could do a lot to influence the feel of the game and make it more palatable (if they include things that de-emphasize the grid, for example--not likely, but possible).

EDIT: Also, PH3's skill powers may fill some of the mechanical gaps I find in the system.

I was wondering if 4e came to your house and shot your dog?

Short of being invited to play with Wil Wheaton and the Penny Arcade crew, I don't think anything will get me to try 4e again. I just don't dig it. It's a fine rule set, just not the one for me. The flavors of D&D that I like best come in a white box and a blue book.

Nah, I went to his house and shot his dog... after 4e gave it rabies. (Heck, there are times when the GSL makes me foam at the mouth....) :p

Ain't trying to catch that ship either, happy with the U.S.S. Pathfinder and the H.M.S. Fantasy Craft, so I am not running down the dock waving my arms.

It has long been my observation that with the right group, virtually any game can be fun.

4e didn't really turn me off, but it didn't turn me on so much either. But, if, say, P-cat offered me a place at his 4e table, damn straight I'd take it! I'm not about to let some disagreements on design keep me from role-playing with good people.
