Haste, how does it work?

Haste [SRD]

Transmutation
Level: Brd 3, Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target: One creature
Duration: 1 round/level
Saving Throw: Fortitude negates (harmless)
Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless)

The transmuted creature moves and acts more quickly than normal. This extra speed has several effects.

On his turn, the subject may take an extra partial action, either before or after his regular action.

He gains a +4 haste bonus to AC. He loses this bonus whenever he would lose a dodge bonus.

He can jump one and a half times as far as normal. This increase counts as an enhancement bonus.

Haste dispels and counters slow.

Doesn't really say, but our group plays it as such. On the round you caste haste or activate a magic item (std action), you get your extra partial action. No real support from the rules, but that's how we do it.

By the rules all spell effects start and end on your initiative, so you instantly get the extra partial.

Some DM's (like myself) may apply a bit of logic or balance and say this dosn't work because you havn't spent long enugh hasted for the extra time to 'build up to' a partial action. That's purely a house rule, though.

A caster immeadiately gets the benefits of any spell cast. The mirror images show up right away, the damage from the fireball is applied instantly, the extra partial action from Haste is gained now. Any exceptions will be in the individual spell description.

For spells with a duration, you also need to remember to count that first round. For example, if you are 5th level and caste Haste, you end up with 5 extra partial actions. It would be easy, however, to mistakenly take 6 if you didn't count that first one as one of the rounds of duration.

we just house ruled it as well. my dm wants to put it next turn and i think it should be right away (figures hey). does anyone know if this question has ever been raised in sage advice?

What in the rule book is making you think that there is a one round delay between the completion of a spell and the application of its effects?

Delaying it to next turn would give you a disadvantage in the round you cast it, since you couldn't do anything else (beside moving). Sometimse that one partial action you get decides the outcome of the combat.

I'll buy that. We did it anyway just because it 'seemed' right.
