I actually think Monte makes quite a bit of sense in the blog post that was linked here.
In particular:
I can't agree with this strongly enough. I agree that there should always be a plethora of materials on the shelf for the D+D brand, but I think it would be preferable to see more modules/adventures (or even campaign settings), as opposed to "Splatbooks".
Speaking from personal experience:
"Book of Nine Swords" is a concept I am somewhat interested in, but couldn't justify pickingit up for the cost, since I still have stuff from "Complete Warrior" I'm waiting to work into a campaign. (If I can find a cheap copy now, with 4E coming, I can probably justify buying it at a reduced rate.)

The point is, at any given time, a DM walking into a game store should have a whole gamut of adventure module choices, for all different levels, but books that add new rules material should come out infrequently.
