Have we lost the dungeon?

Nope. I think you'll find (from what I've read on their boards) that theres a down time as they shift future product from Troll Lord Games to Kenzer for publishing and release.

And in a sense they encapsulate two different styles of adventure writing. In general, Goodman Games adventures exemplify a bare-bones "just the dungeon, ma'am" approach that people stereotype 1E adventures, while Necromancer has a more scenario oriented approach (with lots of dungeon goodness), that seems to typify a more mid-80s, and at times, 2E approach to modules.

Both claim to have 1st Edition style, but one more obviously than the other cleaves much more closely. In that sense, this also illustrates that 3.x has a market for modules and has/had room for both styles.

Necromancer are broadening their product range to include more sourcebook type material and settings as well as modules, for example this year there is Glades of Death - a sourcebook with three small adventures in it, Rappan Athuk Reloaded - a straight adventure module, Wilderlands of High Fantasy boxed set - setting and Shades of Grey - straight adventure.

The big "quest" of Metamorphosis Alpha was to save the ship from disaster (as per the 1973 Canadian series The Star Lost -- see http://www.dvshop.ca/dvcafe/madscreen/starlost.htm for details), not a quest for personal and/or group power. [/QOUTE]

You fell for the big McGuffin. The original game is about surviving the hazards of the ship. It is all about personal and group power, one of the PC ability scores is Leadership which is used to gain a body of followers (also a means for humans to gain mutnat powers by getting mutant subordinates). The ship is likely doomed (unless a Shipmaster decides otherwise).

The ship was huge (Bill Armintrout addresses players taking elevators to unmapped and unconsidered decks before the GM is ready for them in the article) and certainly no more "confined" than a city or small country once the players learned how to get around.
It is huge. It is confined. Learning how to get from deck to deck and from section to section requires over coming hazards and accquiring tools to do so, simply learning where things are is not going to do the trick. Big dungeons are like that.

[QOUTE]
Space: 1999 included an enigmatic confined environment (Moonbase Alpha and, more broadly, whatever was in the range of the Eagles) of unkown topography (they couldn't steer the moon and had railroaded "encounters" as they passed through unknown space) filled with hideous dangers and the crew was willing to commit theft and violence to survive the encounter. I think it has a great deal in common with many traditional dungeon role-playing scenarios. Particular episodes had even more in common and included such plots as exploring derelict spaceships, asteroids, and caves on the moon and defeating the opponents found there.[/QOUTE]

The occupants of moonbase alpha are aware of its capbilities and topography. What they are not aware of is the area it is passing through. Moonbase Alpha is a vessel a lost and wandering one full of hopeful individuals seeking a home, It is a wagon train type situation.
It is not a "dungeon".

You could be on the mark with Logans Run. I could be focusing too muych on why the characters are doing what they are doing.

Mr Cook (or Monte if you are not used to being called that), if you are still on the thread:

Will there be any adventures (in or out of a dungeon) for Iron Lore?

Thanks in advance!

Yes. (You'll be hearing more about that really quite soon.)
