Have you decided to change systems?

I enjoy a good D&D game but haven't played one in a while due to time concerns.

Since my last D&D game I have played:
d20 modern horror (12 to midnight is really good stuff)
Savage Worlds (I've used it for non-fantasy stuff). Simple and fun.
Board games (Settlers of Catan, Puerto Rico, Arkham Horror, Runebound ect) Board games are a heck of a lot easier to set up and prepare for than D&D.

Maybe my last D&D campaign was poor (as a matter of fact I'm sure it was) so it came down to "what can we do to have fun". Board games are the easy answer.

I'd still play D&D again sometime though.

I switched from D&D to WFRP 2nd edition. It has made my life as DM much, much easier. However, as other posters have said, I would love to play in a D&D campaign, just not run it.

I'm running a Ptolus campaign but using a rules-light homebrew system (rules complexity like Savage Worlds or True20). There's a few OGL ideas in the system but it has very different roots.

I cut my DMing teeth on the Dragonlance Saga (card-based) rules system, and I think to a certain extent this game gets back to the feel of that game (although it doesn't use cards).

Like someone else said, I've never been married to one system. I've played GURPS, Gamma World, Top Secret, Star Frontiers, 1st Edition AD&D, Vampire: the Masquerade, Star Wars d20, Call of Cthulhu, d20 Modern, 2nd Edition Exalted. I want to play Castles & Crusades, Conan OGL and Star Wars Saga Edition when that comes out. I want to play Dread after reading Piratecat's description of running the game.

I'm a gamer. Even when I'm playing a system, I study it and try to improve play by adding new elements.

That's part of why I love 3rd Edition D&D. I want people to come in and play it, and either love it or hate it. If they hate it, I hope they find a roleplaying game that satisfies what they feel is missing, because more gamers means more money flowing into the hobby and more people writing for the hobby in any genre. And that's a good thing.

I must confess I get a gamer chubby when I stroll through Enworld, or Dragonsfoot or look at the OSRIC project because passionate gamers are good all around. They invest time and money in the hobby, and insure it will continue, and improve.

I have taken my hiatus from d20 altogether, but will likely revisit in the future at some point. I have taken a renewed interest in Star Frontiers (see my signature), and I am even working on a Fantasy Rule Subset to apply to the Star Frontiers game. When the material is developed further I will share here on ENWorld.

I'm playing a 3.5 game right now. Age of Worms.

I doubt I'll ever run it again, though. But I'm much more forgiving in terms of what I'll play as opposed to what I'll run.

Then again, I think I'm the opposite of the original posts situation, where you left d20 to go play older D&D. I've left D&D, but am still using d20 for other games.

I'm running 3.5 in the Kingdom of Kalamar setting right now. As a chance of pace, a friend of mine is going to run a Shadowrun 4e game as well. (We used to play SR 1 and 2ed way back when).

I enjoy 3.X and am not moving away from it anytime soon... but it's not for everything. :)

I quit playing D&D years ago, just after the 3.0 release. I wasn't happy with the rules, let alone to tone of the game. d20, in general, was promising though, and I thoroughly enjoy some d20 modern, but in the end, I prefer the True20 and M&M systems. So long as support for True20 continues, I will never play a WotC core system again.

Oh, I'm not saying you can't have variety. In my situation we have time for only one system with all of the boardgames we like to play. That one system needs to be one that we can have long term sustainable characters and setting. And that system has changed for us. That's all I'm saying.
Thanks for the clarifications, pard! :)

I think I'm more of a "long-term rotation" kind of guy. I run a 4-year Stormbringer campaign, then an 8-year Vampire campaign with a few months/a year INS/MV campaigns sandwiched in between, a game of Cthulhu here and there, then go d20 full speed ahead during the past 7 years. I alternate systems on the long term (though there's no end in sight for our D&D/d20 habits for now, with Ptolus and all). See what I mean?

Yeah, thats describes my gaming preferences pretty well right now. I quit running any form of D&D/D20 about 2 years ago when WHFRP2 came out. Its a better fit mechanically and stylistically for my group. Then there is also the fact that for me, D20 is a pain to prepapre for- its like a chore to me, and that kills my fun for the game, which means I do a poorer job at DMing it. Also, as my free time pool shrinks, I'd rather spend time on thinking of interesting plots, characters, and locations than stat wrangling a system I don't really like and doesn't fit with my playstyle.

So now its pretty much WHFRP2 and Savage Worlds exclusively for me, with the occasional foray into NWoD for a Werewolf game. One guy still runs a D&D 3.5 game every 4-6 weeks I play in, but I can safely say the chances of me ever running a D&D/D20 game again are slim.
