Have you ever been DMed by a famous game designer? The EGG or Monte?

famous?

Well, my wife and I played in a long private game run by Peter Adkison at GenCon 2000 when 3.0 hit, and there were some other real nice folks at the table (John and Michelle Nephew, even Pete's dad) and we had a blast. He ran something from Dungeon magazine, firmly set it in his home campaign world and we used what he kept referring to as "disposable minis" (the Mage Knight "4 for a dollar" specials at GenCon each year). He's a very entertaining and personable DM, he even got the pizzas. :-) We know he's famous for what he's done, but to us he's our friend.

once had ed greenwood as a DM at gencon. :) didn't even have to pay for it - i got in on a generic ticket cause one of the players didn't show. :D

it was pretty neat. heh, a powerful magic-using guy showed up, and at first i thought it would be *groan* elminster, but it turned out to be this way cooler druid guy. ;)

James Wyatt was my team's DM for the second round of the Eberron open at GenCon. We were pretty happy with him. Of course, he'd written part of the adventure, so he may have had a slight edge over some of the other DMs.

EGG was a good dm other Tsr old timers were as well

Shortly after moving to Milwaukee in 1978, I attended "Spring Revel" at the American Legion Hall in Lake Geneva. I remember playing in a game run by Gary. At the time I know I was impressed maybe it was the fanboy in me. I do remember 1 of the players had a truly over powered character( it was a bring your own character game) and when the guy did something really stupid and got himself killed Gary politely asked for the character sheet so he could inform the player's regular dm of the character's death. All in all I remember his game as being well called. He made you feel like you were really in a book or movie.
I played with many TSR and RPGA big names thru out the Mid 80's at the various Spring & Fall Revel's and the original Winter Fantasy mini cons. Without a doubt the big wigs were a notch above the typical dm at home.

Don't know if you'd count him as famous or note, but I play in a group with Rodney Thompson (Hero's Guide, Noble's Handbook, and SWRPGNetwork). Additionally his little brother plays too.

(Must find way to shake up his internet)

I'm SO going to put "f-in" between my names on my nametag at the upcoming NC Game Day. You get automatic DM-cred!

I suggest that other popular GM's do the same (special attention to Pirate "f-in" cat and Hen "f-in" ry).

Old idea, that...
;)

One guy I currently game with was good friends with Luke Gygax when they lived in SoCal - he said Gary ran a mean game, often using props like gongs and even bellydancers...

When I was first getting into the game design part of the industry, I played in a game with Sean K. Reynolds at Winter Fantasy 2001. It was a blast to say the least. sean threw a whole bunch of critters at us, including some half-blue dragon lizardmen that killed one of the players with their breath weapon. Everyone had a blast to say the least. At Gen Con last year, I played in a Midnight game with Wil Upchurch, Ed "SkeletonKey Games" Bourelle, Ross "Dire Kobold" Richie, Kevin Ruesch and another person who's name I can't remember. It was just a pick up game among designers, but it was still fun. Mostly because it was a knockoff of Pirates of the Caribbean. :)

PKitty, did Bruce run with a lot of crunch at the table (ie. dice-rolling, feat-use, monsters, skill-use, etc.), or was the game mainly story-based with a lot of rulings made on the fly?

It wasn't freeform enough to tell; as a 3e demo, it was quite constrained to showcase certain elements of 3e. I love love love Bruce's imagination, but that wasn't what this short session was about.

I also once played in a Bunnies & Burrows game run by the guy who wrote the game. Sadly, he spent the whole time trying to pick up (or at least flirting excessively with) two teenaged girls at the table. Not the most satisfying gaming experience I've ever had.

In comparison, I've been lucky enough to be DMed by Mike Mearls several times. The man is amazing, and tremendous amounts of fun. Two thumbs up.
