Have you ever broken apart a normal magic item?

Bear in mind here that this is exactly the sort of thing to make players just obsessed... I would say only do this if you can afford/want players to spend hours looking for it, being paranoid about what ate the other one or where it went, asking every merchant, rumor-monger and ale-wife if she has ever heard of another one, and going off on wild goose chases for the slimmest of reasons.

Ultimately, they are going to spend way more time thinking about this item than they would if it were just a whole set...

And, depending on the players, they could find the whole thing amusing, or they could find it really annoying, or they could just ignore the whole thing.

twenty years from now, long after the campaign has wrapped, you will still be hearing about it - and it will still be listed on their character sheet.

Careful, if you analyze D&D too much, men in black suits will come after you.

I covered on this briefly in the Artificer's Handbook. Items that come in pairs would be good candidates for gestalt equipment rules. Essentially, you could make each glove a magic item that does nothing, and then together, they grant +2 to strength. Although, there aren't actually rules to create magic items that do nothing, so that would be a problem. I'd have to think on that. hmmmm

And gloves of archery are a single item, I believe. In fact, I think the description in the DMG indicates that it is a single glove. If you think about it - unless you were ambidextrous, no one would need two gloves of archery, since you only pull the string back with one hand.

So, technically, you could wear a glove of archery on one hand, and something else on the other hand.

I imagine an epic quest to the Land of Laundry, where all the lost single socks go!

TO ADVENTURE, MY FRIENDS! We shall raid the lint trap of evil, and find treasure beyond imagining, and probably static.

I have a standing rule on broken/ partial magic Items -
They have to be reforged / crafted by someone using the craft feat.
The broken item provides a cost savings for creating the new one.
This is also a way to recharge wands and staves -
- but I love the plot hook aspects :)
I have left half of non-magical paired items lying around, occasionally with associated body bits

I think they are bracers in 3.5; and both hands are important in archery. You knock/draw/loose with one hand....

you AIM with the other :)

Or better yet, a boot that still has a toe in it. With nail polish on it. ;)
You want a toe? I can get you a toe, believe me. There are ways, Dude. You don't wanna know about it, believe me.
