Have you ever had a chance to meet a celebrity?

Oh, I just remember a story I can tell, since it wasn't me involved (no, really, it wasn't - I wasn't even there), and it isn't someone I personally know, just someone encountered.

My friend assaulted Keri Russell, who played Felicity on the show of the same name. Now by assaulted I don't mean he hit her, but he threw a glass of water at her at a restaurant.

Apparently it was her birthday, and her and her friends got totally smashed and were yelling to each other in this restaurant and shoving the back of my friends table a bunch, being a bit energetic (and drunk). He got upset, and asked them to keep it down a bit. Instead of politely saying they were sorry, they decided to call him names and (to put it kindly) go blank himself. So my friend, unfortunately, decided enough was enough, and instead of telling management (which is what he should have done) he went to his water. He raised his water to his face, as if to drink, and instead tossed it right over his shoulder at the group. It hit Keri Russell and ran down her new leather jacket. The group immediately got up and was ready to (drunkenly) fight my friend - they all had to be separated by management.

Only after they got up did my friend even realize who she was.

Ricky Steamboat and Rick Flare at a zippy mart in the wee hours of the morning about 20 years ago.

Lisa Gibbons (Lizza now) went to school with her.

Spike at GenCon. A very nice and pleasent guy, thay seemed to enjoy meeting people.

Ha. I'm the ultimate geek. I met Bill Nye the Science Guy.

And Alan Alda.

I would have got to meet Douglas Adams, but he died the day before he was scheduled to speak at my school's graduation :(

The people I've met aren't typical celebreties in the tradition sense, but I've met at least 4 Nobel prize winners in physics, including Steve Chu (laser trapping of atoms) who actually visited my lab and Doug Osheroff (superfluid helium 3). Each year my physics department tries to get the current Nobel prize winner or Wolfe prize winner to give a talk. I've also met Mandelbrot (the fractals guy).

I walked RIGHT BY Flavor Flav back in the early 90s before a U2 concert (Public Enemy was one of the opening acts).

Hmmm, who else. Jerri Ryan smiled and waved RIGHT AT ME at GenCon one year.

Uh, hmmm....

Oh, yeah, this!

My cousin met Randy "Macho Man" Savage and Lex Lugar at a local gas station after a wrestling event around 5 years ago.

I saw Billy Dee Williams in an airport a couple of years ago.

At cons I've seen ("met" would be stretching it) Jeri Ryan, Claudia Christian, Mira Furlan, George Takei, and probably a few others I can't think of. I am generally happy enough catching a glimpse of a con celebrity - I think it's a waste of time to wait in line for a couple of hours to meet them, when they're sure to be surly after having to deal face-to-face with hairy, sweaty and grotesquely obese geeks.

However, I had a brief conversation with Julie Caitlin Brown regarding coffee in line at Origins a couple years ago. She's quite tall. And I met and shook the hand of Jerry Doyle at an earlier Origins. (In the hotel bar, not in the autograph line.)

As for gaming bigshots, I've had conversations with Frank Chadwick, Andy Chambers, Steve Jackson, and various others, and have talked on several occasions with Frank Mentzer (great guy) and Gary Gygax (also a great guy.)

Most of the celebrities I've met are from "Doctor Who," as my wife and I hit a lot of conventions in 1983 (it was the 20th anniversary of the show that year). I've met:

Patrick Troughton (2nd Doctor)
Jon Pertwee (3rd Doctor)
Tom Baker (4th Doctor)
Peter Davidson (5th Doctor)
Nicholas Courthey (Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart)
Elizabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith)
Louise Jamison (Leela)
Janet Fielding (Tegan Jovanka)

I actually (and quite literally) "ran into" Nicholas Courtney in a hallway; we were each coming around a corner from opposite directions. Of course, if you've never seen "Doctor Who," I'm probably not impressing you much, huh?

My wife met Angela Lansbury on a plane once. Here's how it went:

My wife: "Oh my God! You're on a REAL plane!"
Angela (smiling): "Yes, that's right, dear."

(My wife was immediately mortified that she'd said something that stupid to one of her favorite actresses - she's a big "Murder, She Wrote" fan - but Angela was really cool about it, no doubt having encountered similar reactions many times.) :)

My oldest son met Goldberg (of wrestling fame) at a shopping mall. He also met Dr. Midnight at GenCon, does that count? :)

And I probably won't win any "cool" points for this one, but my Mom went to high school with John Wayne Gacy. (He was a senior, she was a freshman; they really didn't know each other that well.)

Game Celebs: While at AggieCon (Texas A&M) and playing Bendedict in a Amber LARP, I kind of walked into the Vampire LARP and managed to get Justin Achilli to let me be Benedict in his Vampire Dark Ages LARP. It was great fun.

Sports Celebs:I have done custom framing for a good number of Rockets and Oilers players and their wives.

Music: I met Marilyn Manson once at a club. I'm not a fan, but he was alright in person.

Sad that the only notable story was with a game designer... ;)
