Have you ever had a chance to meet a celebrity?

The exploding head lady from Total Recall was my high school drama teacher. Priscilla Anderson. I had a dream about her once. She was trying to kill me. It was very disturbing.

Currently I work in a deli and Olympic athlete Marion Jones comes in from time to time. She is very polite, unassuming.

I met Majel Barrett at a GenCon I was working at and got an autograph. It was at the end of a very busy day in the Dealer room and I'm sure she was tired but she was pleasant and gracious.

I've gamed with Ken Rolston and William R. Forstchen (scroll down) at various small gaming cons. Both cool guys. Ken loves to express things subtlely and chew scenery shamelessly when rping. Bill is quieter in style but given to dramatic moments. :)

A neighbor of mine way back when was Happy the Clown; not the one from TV but he worked for the Joie Chitwood Auto Thrill Show. He was a really cool guy who taught my brother, mother and I clowning. One of the guys I met then was on a TV show with Ed McMahon back in the early 50's.

Met Donald Moffat at a restaurant; he played Rem on the "Logan's Run" tv show among other things. Since he was with family I just said hello and expressed how we enjoyed his work.

At a Dr Who convention met Sarah Sutton (Nyssa) and Paul Darrow (Avon/"Blake's 7")

While in the Navy I met

George H. Gay, jr. . He gave a talk about the Battle of Midway from his 'unique' perspective. :)

Randy "Macho Man" Savage rammed me with a shopping cart at a St. Petersburg Toys R Us. Hard.

I used to see Hulk Hogan just about every week (his kid played soccer with my nephews). Big guy, big humvee, big deal.

We met Henry Winkler at the Rennaisance Festival a few years ago. Dimunitive.

My wife once got drunk with Meat Loaf in his suite after a concert (his wife was there the whole time---or so she says).

When I was a child in San Francisco I remember meeting Anton LeVay, who was friends with my aunt (they both owned exotic cats, he a pair of black panthers and she an ocelot and cheetah).

I'm scraping the botom of the barrel here, but my mom claims to have dated Jack Palance on more than one occasion, and she can't stand him to this day.

I know I'm forgetting some.

G'day

I once shared the back seat of a Landcruiser with Thomas Keneally for about an hour. We were on the way from Kempsey (the town where we both grew up) to Nulla-Nulla, to watch the filming of the axe-murder scene in The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith. But that doesn't have much to do with SF.

Regards,

Agback

Hmmm. My Dad went to the same dentist as Princess Grace of Monaco, back when she was just Grace Kelly, before her film career took off. He used to stare at her over magazines in the waiting room.

I've got to do better than that. And my sighting of Steven Seagal in a New Orleans restaurant won't cut it.

Let's see; down in the Florida Keys when I was six, I briefly "played" tennis with the baseball player Ted Williams, who my grandparents knew moderately well. He had a fierce temper; when playing a doubles game with my grandfather and two other people, he lost his temper after a bad shot and broke his racket.

We're buddies with Pete Abrams, author of Sluggy Freelance, as well as Shirt Guy Tom. KidCthulhu and I actually made it into a Sluggy cartoon a few years back! Kinda cool.

I've spoken by email with the author of The Core's screenplay, as well as the originator of the Jackie Chan Adventures cartoon. Other people may recogize him as well. I think he games. :D

Barring con or comic book sightings, the only other celebrity of note is Dennis Hopper, who is married to my cousin. He's a nice guy; very soft-spoken in person, surprisingly enough.

Let's see. I was helping a friend who's an independent comic publisher with his table at the big NYC comic con a couple of years ago, and I rode up in an elevator with the mom from the original Lost In Space and the original Batgirl.

Also, while milling around, I saw that bald, black guy who used to do the 7up commercials and was in Live And Let Die (I think he ws Punjab in Annie too). From a distance, I saw Adam "Batman" West and Frank "The Riddler" Gorshin. I think Julie "Catwoman" Newmar was there as well, but I didn't see her.

I used to work for MTV years ago, and the guy from Saturday Night Live who used to be on Kids In The Hall (he was the Chicken Lady) came to the office once when I was at lunch. :(

I also met El Hijo del Santo, son of legendary Mexican wrestler and movie star El Santo, at a wresling match. Not a fun experience. He charged an arm and a leg for autographs, plus would only sign something you bought from him. Also, he had handlers who took your money and gave your the autograph and he ducked out in the middle of the show, just after his match.

Even though there's no excuse for the surprise double-charge for the autograph, the handlers may have been in place because he may not speak english. It still sucks not actually getting to meet him.

Like most other people, I've meet loads of comic celebs. Two incidents stand out, though.

First, I met an artist. He seemed a little full of himself, but generally okay. A year or so later, I met the writer of the book (by this point, the artist had moved on to another). When I told him about meeting the artist, he went on about how much he hated the guy. Apparently, the artist claimed in interviews about how he was helping to write the book but wasn't getting credit. He also said that the writer was jealous of him and would change some of the art and was compromisng his artistic integrity.

The truth, at least according to the writer, was that the artist would get the script and change things in order to draw what he wanted, regardless of the fact that it screwed up continuity and future storylines.

And the changes in art was because the artist would put in X-rated stuff in the background, like porno theaters. Since this was a Marvel comic, these had to go.

The other incident had to do with a pretty well-know guy who mainly does independent work, but he may have done some stuff for Marvel and DC.

When I first met him, he seemed really nice. A few years later, I met him at another convention and he remembered me. He was nice then as well.

Years and years go by, and I meet him at that NYC con. He remembered me and we talked for awhile. He was really friendly and said that we should get together and have lunch on Monday (this was Saturday). I give him directions to the building I worked in at the time. Of course, he doesn't show up.

I call him the next day and he tells me that he forgot and he says he'll make it up to me by buying me lunch a few days later. We make plans and I call the day before. Everything's all set.

He still doesn't show up.

Jerk.

Umm... Well, since I live in a small, cold country in northern Europe, there aren't many international celebrities that I've met. Well, none. Maybe. Depends on how you define 'met' and 'international celebrity'.

Lessee... We live right next door to Taneli Mäkelä, an actor. He's quite famous, in Finland. Also, he played Frodo in a Finnish TV version of the Lord of the Rings, a decade ago. I've also received the autographs of Vesa Vierikko, another actor - he was Gandalf, by the way - and Mikko Kivinen. He played Barliman Butterbur. Kivinen and Vierikko are both quite famous, too... In Finland.

Then, in various cons, I've seen Tuomas Pirinen and Rick Priestley, of Games Workshop, Mike Pondsmith (worked with Traveller, I think), and Justin Achilli, from White Wolf. He was a funny guy.

In addition, thanks to my father being a politician, I've met quite a few of those, too, including our country's current president. I was about five at the time, though. :D

Um... I'm related to Linda Lampenius, a Finnish violinist who... exposed herself to Playboy magazine a few years ago... not that I know anything about it! :o She's my dad's cousin, once removed from his mother's side...

Other than that? I've shaken hands with Mika Häkkinen, the famous Finnish Formula 1 driver...

And like NiTessine, I saw Justin Achilli at RopeCon last year. Man, he was really smart, and funny too.

And I once got an autograph from Teemu Selänne, a Finnish icehockey player from NHL. But that's two years ago. I've probably lost the autograph...

That's about it... although one of the youth workers from my congregation is a well-known Finnish gospel artist... does that count? :)

As for gaming bigshots, I've had conversations with Frank Chadwick, Andy Chambers, Steve Jackson, and various others, and have talked on several occasions with Frank Mentzer (great guy) and Gary Gygax (also a great guy.)

Oh my goodness! I got to tell Chadwick somebody called him a celebrity!

you reminded me.... I was playing Family Business (using names of actual gangsters on the cards) with my girlfriend and another couple and my girlfriend's mother pointed at one of the Purple Gang and said, "Oh, I used to date him.". It was entertaining seeing my girl and her sister freak ovcer the idea that their mother might have had some excitement in her life. :)
