Let's see. I was helping a friend who's an independent comic publisher with his table at the big NYC comic con a couple of years ago, and I rode up in an elevator with the mom from the original Lost In Space and the original Batgirl.
Also, while milling around, I saw that bald, black guy who used to do the 7up commercials and was in Live And Let Die (I think he ws Punjab in Annie too). From a distance, I saw Adam "Batman" West and Frank "The Riddler" Gorshin. I think Julie "Catwoman" Newmar was there as well, but I didn't see her.
I used to work for MTV years ago, and the guy from Saturday Night Live who used to be on Kids In The Hall (he was the Chicken Lady) came to the office once when I was at lunch.
I also met El Hijo del Santo, son of legendary Mexican wrestler and movie star El Santo, at a wresling match. Not a fun experience. He charged an arm and a leg for autographs,
plus would only sign something you bought from him. Also, he had handlers who took your money and gave your the autograph and he ducked out in the middle of the show, just after his match.
Even though there's no excuse for the surprise double-charge for the autograph, the handlers may have been in place because he may not speak english. It still sucks not actually getting to meet him.
Like most other people, I've meet loads of comic celebs. Two incidents stand out, though.
First, I met an artist. He seemed a little full of himself, but generally okay. A year or so later, I met the writer of the book (by this point, the artist had moved on to another). When I told him about meeting the artist, he went on about how much he hated the guy. Apparently, the artist claimed in interviews about how he was helping to write the book but wasn't getting credit. He also said that the writer was jealous of him and would change some of the art and was compromisng his artistic integrity.
The truth, at least according to the writer, was that the artist would get the script and change things in order to draw what he wanted, regardless of the fact that it screwed up continuity and future storylines.
And the changes in art was because the artist would put in X-rated stuff in the background, like porno theaters. Since this was a Marvel comic, these had to go.
The other incident had to do with a pretty well-know guy who mainly does independent work, but he may have done some stuff for Marvel and DC.
When I first met him, he seemed really nice. A few years later, I met him at another convention and he remembered me. He was nice then as well.
Years and years go by, and I meet him at that NYC con. He remembered me and we talked for awhile. He was really friendly and said that we should get together and have lunch on Monday (this was Saturday). I give him directions to the building I worked in at the time. Of course, he doesn't show up.
I call him the next day and he tells me that he forgot and he says he'll make it up to me by buying me lunch a few days later. We make plans and I call the day before. Everything's all set.
He still doesn't show up.
Jerk.
