Have you seen the aboleth mini?

Before passing too much judgement, I recommend waiting until seeing it in person. It's not an easy creature to photograph.

As english isn't my mother language I have some problem translating some things from portuguese, I will try anyway.

Problem seems to be the use of "bright primary" colors instead of a more subtle tones (I don't know how "apagado" would translate - take Demonweb's Sarcophagus as example). Like some Demonweb miniatures looks like a very "shiny" ink (Grinning Imp), even on hand. I don't think it will be different with Aboleth.

Aquatic creatures that live away from clear waters aren't colorful like shallow water fishes... :)

The constrast between the two colors on that 3.5 art is subtle, smooth. Aboleth mini looks like HELLO I'M BLUE HELLO I'M ORANGE... so, based on Demonweb, I don't think that creature will improve on my hand Peter, I'm probably won't buy it to be sure...

Don't get me wrong, except for the cartoonish style (which obviously a 4E thing, not a mistake from sculptors, who made an excellent job capturing 4E spirit) the other miniatures previewed look very good. I just wish a more subtle paiting was made for aboleth, like that Goblin Delver.

TLDR: Aboleth sux for my taste, Beholder rocks rocks rocks! Go in that direction, please :)

avin, that was excellent English. And, I agree with what you've said in this thread.

Peter, I really like you and your work, but you're going to need to do some serious convincing on this one. Nothing about it looks subtle. I'm not sure how that mini compares to the picture you posted at all.

I do think this is a particularly difficult mini to sculpt. I'm not sure that the art is what everyone pictures, I'm not sure the art has stayed consistent over time, I'm not sure there are good color schemes.

I like that they tried to have it rising out of slime, but that looks like a white cloud, not slime.

I'll wait to pass judgment until I see it, but I'm not holding out great hope at this point.

Nothing is sacrid in 4e.

Size changes

Appearance changes

Color changes

and now Pokemon influences.

sigh.... one era ends so that another may... begin.

That's what it looks like to you, huh? That's not what it looks like to me.

I would find it a little easier to judge the aboleth mini if I saw it lined up next to Medium-size minis instead of Large ones; and I'm willing to concede that it might look better if it weren't bottom-lit. That said, I still like the Reaper version much, much better. Subtler colors, and a more Cthulhoid look and feel.

(To be fair, the colors with a Reaper mini are entirely the choice of whoever paints the thing. But then, I like painting minis.)

Meh. None of those minis are blowing my skirt up so to speak. I've got tons of large humanoid/giant/troll etc enough to field a large army if needed (and it will never be needed). The Aboleth is at least different but the colour scheme is pretty crappy. I really like the fact that l'll be able to see these minis before purchase to ensure i never get another large human-shaped mini again :)
