D&D 5E (2014) Have you thrown 88 opponents at your party?

150+ kobolds in a Pool of Radiance conversion. The caster with fireball had a ball.

I don't think anyone at my table wants that. The biggest fight we had was when I was running the Skyreach Castle thing toward the end of Hoard of the Dragon Queen. The PCs were disguised as cultists, and realized that right during the middle of morning prayers led by some cult big-wigs in the courtyard would be a good time to reveal themselves and just attack...everyone at once. 50 cultists, a couple of evil wizards and clerics, some Ogres.

Weird thing is it worked. Fireballs are pretty handy. One of my players is a wiz (heh!) at playing spellcasters, and knows what spells to cast and when. The halfling barbarian was a killing machine, too. It turned into a running battle as the evil leaders realized the tide was turning against them.

1-hp minions. Let the heroes cut them down like bowling pins. Blow up a dozen at once with fireballs. It's fun to do once in a while -- let' them really feel like mighty heroes.

Man, if I ever run a party up to the point where someone can take meteor swarm? You can bet I'm going to somehow give them a 300-style battle where they can just annihilate most of an army's worth of minions in one shot. That's an opener they'll remember...

Highest npc count in a combat encounter was something around 800 orcs. Most where ran as 10-20 swarms.

I've thrown large numbers (50 -100) of goblins and orcs at PCs back in 1e and 2e (when you could totally roll that up for the size of an encounter). Did so with some high level PCs and while they beat them all, they were hurting by the end of the fight. Even with their high ACs (or rather, low ACs at the time), hits were still getting through.

In 5e, no, I've not done so. My one group ended the last session with four 5th-6th level PCs in the middle of a fight with 20 bandits. Less than half of the bandits are down and two PCs have had to break out the healing.

Voted Yes, but I really haven't thrown exactly 88 enemies at my pcs. I've thrown larger groups, though.

No, but did throw about 120 skeletons at a party back in 2e Ravenloft.
