D&D 5E Have you thrown 88 opponents at your party?

Have you thrown 88 opponents at your party?

Oh yeah. Surrounded by 88 wood elves with longbows. They're 120+ feet away, hidden and behind cover, and no two are adjacent.

"Trespass in our forest, will ya? Poach our game, and steal our firewood, will ya?" --nocks an arrow-- "Only once, city boy..."

Apocalypse from the sky...

The party managed to protect the mage just long enough for him to pull off using that thing on 3 armies after he set up a ritual to collect xp from killing people in a mass death (it was roleplayed as siphoning off bits of essense of every soul involved) ritual we found in a game resource (cant remember where).

After many rolls to determine factors of each army it was determined that he had killed about 23 million people a couple demons and a small clutch of dragon wyrmlings after including amount of people killed in the nation of drow that i didnt tell the party was right under the city they were currently in.

face palm

Don't forget the DMG rules for handling mobs so instead of rolling 88 attack and damage rolls, you just hit the party 22 times with average damage each.

Freezing sphere is a spell that a wizard might use to drop entire armies. 300 foot range, 60 foot radius. That can be several hundred creatures. If you count diagonals as 1 space, that can be over 500 creatures. If you don't it can still be above 400. Ask yourself what a 20th level wizard might do with the spell considering you can cast it 6 times and deliver all that damage in a single round.

Well do 200 Orcs versus the group count?

Ok they had arcane help in form of a very high level spell scroll and an artefact, but still.

No, but I have plans to do so at the climax of the campaign. They'll see a horde of undead coming, and will have a X # of rounds head start. Every bit of time they spend dithering, fighting the more potent enemies blocking their path, or doing anything other than rushing ahead towards the final boss area, will result in the horde getting closer and closer.

If the timer runs out, I'll be putting 8 skeletons on the map every single turn. The party will be level 12 and could probably hold them off for a very long time with just attacks and cantrips, but I don't expect them to want to do that. It'll be psychological pressure to hurry!

I did 100 archers, and used a spreadsheet to immediately do all the rolls and apply damage to each character depending on AC, resistances, etc.

the sheet was a lot of work but did great, it was a truly epic fight.
