He made a perform check of 40?

Not all performances will be 2+ hours in length, though.

Go to, say, a show by the Cirque du Soleil; from what I've observed, the majority of those performances for which Tumbling would be the appropriate skill, tend to be well under 5 minutes in length - two or three minutes maybe. And ... to the accompaniment of music, so there's no saying the Bard couldn't maintain his Inspire Confidence as part of the "musical accompaniment" aspect of the whole, and make his perform check for an "aid another" effort towards the overall impression the performance gives to the crowd.

Of course, such a show would be abysmally SHORT, but the monk would likely give several such performances in a night (every half-hour, perhaps). With sufficient numbers of spells available, the scenario outlined above is IMO entirely feasible.

I do concur WRT "Take 20" and perform. Even "Take 10" is pushing it, IMO, but I'd still possibly allow for that - but not "Take 20". Nosir. ^_^

At a 40, I'd say the onlookers would still talk about occasionally years later. There may be copycat performances as well.

Think Jimi Hendrix doing the Star Spangled Banner. A stroke of genius that is talked about and still played many years later.

It also is a huge part of his legend. A 40 is a nice performance, leaving the patrons absolutely astounded and unable to talk about much else for a while.

True, but I think that the perform use of the Tumble skill is such a small issue that I don't think it really makes any difference. At most, it can get you a few gp in a day- and by the point you're able to get that you have to be such a high level that it doesn't make any difference. I've only seen it used as a Perform skill once in an actual game, and it wasn't for an audience. I don't see everyone pouring ranks into Tumble purely for the performance aspect of it- any ranks that go into it would have gone into it anyway.

Yep. It's something to take advantage of if you're looking for a few GP. Then again, it does give you a means of supporting yourself without taking Profession or Craft ranks.

In our Planescape game, my character's visible means of support is as a tumbler/wireman at a circus in Sigil. It's a true pity that the Perform table doesn't go on farther.

Well, the ELH has rules for extreme-DC effects when making a Perform check:

Code:
Initial ----------New attitude----------
Attitude Hos Unf Ind Fri Hel Fanatic
------------- --------------------------------
Hostile <40 40 45 55 70 170
Unfriendly <25 25 35 45 60 140
Indifferent - <21 21 35 50 110
Friendly - - <21 21 40 80
Helpful - - - <21 21 70

or details on just what a "fanatic" attitude entails, you'll have to check the ELH. One, it's a couple paragraphs of typing that I don't feel up to; For two, I'm not sure if that information is OGC or not. ^_^

So, one effect of a Perform (or equivalent) check coming out at 40, would be to generally predispose the audience to be a bit friendlier to the performer - for example, even those who might have been outright hostile might now feel some (grudging) respect for his skills, if not the character himself. Most of the audience was probably in the "indifferent" category, and a DC40 Perform check would move them to "friendly" - so there might be a few offers of "lemme buy ya a drink" or the like, or a step up in coin income (of DC30 is worth 3d6gp per day, then DC40 is probably worth (IMO) 6d6gp, or even 2d4pp, per day.

No, Altamont was correct. Taking twenty assumes that you take the action twenty times until you do it perfectly. You thus suffer the consequenses (sp?) for rolls 1-19 when doing so. So in terms of performance, the audience would be watching you do it over and over, as you went, "No no! One more time and I'll get it *just* right." Not quite the same dramatic effect to it.

I saw a juggling act like this once.... :)
