Heat Producing Spell Idea

First Post
I was looking at the Cont. Flame spell recently and it got me wondering. The spell is rather handy. Torch flame, no heat, doesn't use oxygen, just darn handy. And more character than the old Cont. Light spell. Which got me thinking, what level would a Cont. Heat spell be? A spell that creates a small (6"x6" say) surface area that produces a steady source of heat. Maybe make it require an object the desired size as a spell component. The heat temperature could range anywhere from 100 degrees to 500 degrees. This would revolutionize an entire world. Alchemy, herbalism, mage's lab, steam engines and of course cooking. Maybe each spell only produces 100 degrees of heat but you could physically stack them to generate more heat. Perchance make the spell component out of copper or iron.

Any thoughts?

I'm thinking that these would be stationary objects. Or part of a larger device that required heat, say a steam powered vehicle.

Dark Fire

The complete wizard's handbook (2nd ed.) had some nice ideas for magic items, including darkfire: shadowy fire without light, and coldfire: firelight without heat...

I believe I have a darkfire spell lieing around somwhere that can start fires without heat, but it's has 3 versions and is 4th level... if all you want is fire and no light I'd say make it a second level evocation.

(this is very usefull for campfires when you don't want to give away vour position)
