Helen Mirren Interested In Playing Dr. Who?

I think I'd rather see a black Doctor Who than a woman. Seems like it would be more groundbreaking. There have been plenty of major female roles in the series, even if not as "The Doctor." There have been two black companions in 50 years, and I think that's being generous to Mickey to call him a companion.

Patterson Joseph was in the running for the 11th Doctor. I think he'd make a great Doctor.

Sophie Okonedo, who played Liz Ten, is a Black British woman who has won a Golden Globe, an Academy Award, two BAFTRAs, and numerous other awards for her acting. How often has a Time Lord regenerated into a form of another person?

At least once - Colin Baker played a minor role in the show prior to becoming the Doctor.

I guess we could cite Romana adopted the likeness of Princess Astra of Atrios as a precedent for this too.

I find that weird - it implies Time Lords can choose their regeneration, whereas the Doctor has never shown any ability to do so (and has often been surprised by the result).

I guess maybe it's something she specifically knew how to do, which the Doctor doesn't. Or maybe he just chooses not to, being a fairly chaotic individual.

It is an oddity but apparently possible. I suppose within the structure of only having so many regeneration cycles it even seems frivolous to use up one of them on a whim. Doctor Who and Romana are both Time Lords who have done unconventional things from time to time and seem to be unusual in that regard. Perhaps a Romana spin off show would be a posible way forward. Could two Time Lord shows run concurrently and both be successful?

Dunno. The only examples of extended universe shows are The Sarah Jane Adventures (for kids), Torchwood (for adults), that single episode of K9 & Company, and that existing K9 show with the flying futuristic K9 (for kids again).

Those seem to have all been fairly well received. I'm guessing that any attempt at a concurrent Time Lord show would need to utilize some of the best talent from Doctor Who to lend it credibility and get it off on the right foot. Maybe a project overseen by Steven Moffat.
