Help! Entering a new group.....

I'm entering a new gaming group (met online) and I know little about their characters (or their DM). All I know is:

• 
  Half-Elven Clr/Sor
  Elven Ranger
  Human Fighter
  Halfling Rogue

....and that they're all 3rd level or so.

What sort of character should I take?

I'm thinking: cleric. But they seem woefully lacking in arcane magic too. What to do?

I say straight wizard ...preferably a generalist.The cleric/sorceror is gonna be of no real help arcane wise until higher lvls at least.
Also keep your mind open to elemental savant if......they are soo coool.I also don't know your feelings about a psion or even if they will be allowed into the game but that is a great choice if you want to have magic,but are sick of the same boring old wizard.

In my opinion, you can NEVER have too many healers. If you are thinking about how to best serve the party, I would say cleric. I'm sure the fighter, rogue, and ranger will be very appreciative, while allowing the sorcerer/cleric to be more flexible.

However, in my opinion, you should also consider what type of character YOU want to play; what type of character will be the most FUN.

But will a straight wizard survive? Do people even play those any more?

I thought of a wizard(transmuter), as with a sorcerer around, all of the "big bang" spells will be taken.

I'm a flexible guy....I like playing lots of different classes. So that's really not an issue.

Given the party, I agree that cleric is probably the way to go. Maybe an elven cleric of luck and protection? I get long bow from my elven heritige, so I can be the dreaded cleric archer. (See your local "smackdown" thread.)

Is there a better type of cleric?

I may have a decent idea, but I know this board is way smarter than I am......waaaaay smarter.

An elven bard archer? Uh...why is that a good idea?

BTW: What have people's experiences been like, joining new groups? I've never joined a group "out of the blue" before.........

Try not to argue with people. Make sure you do not monopolize the conversation. Bring a snack assortment...
