Help - how to build a cleric/rogue?

In a once-in-a-while game I'm playing a dwarf cleric of Vergadain, the dwarven god of luck and merchants (and thieves in a not-evil way). So here's what I learned.

1) Don't multiclass - you can get some good thievery abilities by taking the Trickery Domain which gives you Bluff, Disguise, and Hide as class skills. Luck is another good domain for a thievery cleric.

2) Look at your feats carefully - I took Divine Vigor at 1st level to make my dwarf nimble.

3) Take cross-class ranks in thievery skills like Open Locks and Disable Device, if it suits you. You can boost your trap/lock abilities with Detect Traps, Guidance, and other boost-spells.

4) There isn't much out there in the way of WOTC-official prestige classes for rogue/clerics. I'm looking at Loremaster at level 13 ...

Best of luck!

I'm playing a rogue/cleric/church inquisitor/shadowbane stalker (17 total levels--Rog 1, Clr 3, Church Inquisitor 5, shadowbane stalker 8) at the moment and it has very much the feel of a 2e multiclass. The character isn't quite a proper cleric, but he can get the job done unless the job is turning undead. (He is, in fact, the party's only cleric, so if he doesn't get the job done, no-one will). He's not quite everything that a single-class rogue would be either, but he fills that role reasonably well too. All told, I think Shadowbane stalker is a very well done rogue/cleric multiclass prestige class, but the flavor (and a few abilities) would need to be re-worked in order for it to be good for an Olidammaran priest.

In the game I'm playing in now, I actually sat down with my DM to work out a prestige class for my rogue/cleric. His deity is the god of luck, freedom and trickery (though it's not malicious trickery. More knocking the cruel and the self-righteous down a peg. Tricking or stealing from an innocent is one of the worst sins in their eyes, and fooling a simpleton is like kicking a puppy), so the prestige class is more than a simple merging of clerics and rogues (he gets Knock, Break Enchanment and Freedom as 1/day abilties as levels up) but he also gets some nice synergy, like burning a Turn attempt to sneak attack undead for a round and whatnot.

I just took the second level of the prestige class at the end of the last session, so I don't know if it's going to turn out balanced in the long run, but right now I feel like a crappy rogue mixed with a crappy cleric, though taking Practiced Spellcaster at 6th level helped the crappy cleric part some. Any attempt to turn undead is pretty laughable, though. At least I get "Shank the Unliving" next level so that won't be an issue anymore. I think once I get a few more levels of the PrC under my belt, my character will start hitting his stride, but levels 4 through 7 I was feeling pretty useless. I mostly spent my time playing flank buddy with the real rogue so he could dish out good damage and I could put out passable, and then use my spells to heal people up after the fight. The last fight we were in I did better, but that was because the enemy took a couple rounds to close with us, giving me time to buff myself while waiting for them to get there.

Which I realize doesn't help you with your issue in an official way, hopefully it will give you some ideas of what playing a cleric/rogue is like. I would suggest talking to your DM about putting together a custome PrC for you, or else adapting the Temple Raider class into one that grants cleric spell progression instead of its own list.

I'm a long time fan of the straight up multiclass... works really well in this case. You take one level of rogue, for skills, several levels of cleric. Then you take another level of rogue. Then you take lots of leves of cleric. Later on, you take another level of rogue. Particularly with Trickery, you won't miss out on keeping your skills high.

Rogue 3/Cleric 17.... BAB is only +14, but you have decent saves, evasion (which is a reason to stick with light armor), +2d6 sneak attack, good rogue and interpersonal skills, and nearly full casting.

An alternative would be rogue 2/cleric 8/loremaster 10. BAB is only +12, but the skills are really nice.

How high a level are we talking? If quite high, you could consider a Rogue / Divine Crusader, though I'd suggest you allow extra domains at about L4 and L8. In your case, Trickery, Luck, and perhaps Instinct. Rog8 / Ftr 2 / DC10 for a 20th level character.

Level 1, to as high as it gets. That makes multiclassing somewhat problematic.

I opted for a human cleric with Adept Learner, picking up rogue as her 2nd level and then continuing with cleric. Very ability-intensive, probably not an ideal build (she's a mediocre thief an a mediocre cleric - especially in matters of Charisma), but it seems fun. Rogue at level 1 would be more effective, sure, but will rob the character of the clerical vibe for the first level, which I don't want to do.

Once again - thanks all :)

You so need to start out with Rogue for that build... starting out with Cleric hampers your abilities immensely!

That's - BTW - why I like to start at 2nd level (apart from survivability), because you don't have this silly 'I suddenly become a ... at 2nd level' stuff. ;)

Bye

Yeah, but it's more fun. :)

Edit: Yes, there is a lot to be said for starting out at 2nd level. Maybe when this one dies... ;)
