Help! I can't find it!

Could you be speaking of foo dogs/foo lions? They travel the planes and protect people. There's a writeup of them in the 2e Planescape Monstrous Compendium I, a foo creature template in the 3e third party Tome of Horrors, among other places.

Edit: They're also CG and can travel astrally or ethereally at will. ToH lists Monster Manual II (1e) as when they first popped up.

Foo-critters doesn't sound right, but I'm less sure about that than some of the other things that have been mentioned here. :erm: I didn't know there was a Planescape Monstrous Compendium. I guess in my obsessive accumulation of D&D material over the decades, that's one I overlooked. But, If I've never seen or heard of it, then I can't have taken anything from it for my campaigns.

In 2007 I packed up all my D&D stuff (along with everything else I own) and moved from CT to WA. I've found and unpacked most of what I used to have, but there are gaps. For example, I own every printed issue of Dragon Magazine and Dungeon Magazine ever published, but I can't find the first 20+ years of them. I know the movers stole some of my stuff, I'm just hoping they turn up. Can't imagine why the movers would take only part of my collection.

Sorrowdusk, you mentioned "Rakasta". If you meant "Rakshasa", then no, not them. These cats are not humanoid at all.

I want to thank everybody for trying. I'll keep checking back in case someone comes up with anything else.

Rakasta are NOT Rakshasa, but went from being normal cats or something like that to being turned more human.

Started with a voyage or something on a ship I think was called Princess Ark, but the feline heroes part is what makes them seem like what you may be talkign about.

I believe what you’re referring to is the Foo lion. It should be noted that there are three races all of which dwell in the Etheric plane. The Lions are Lawful good. It sounds to me like that’s what you are looking for.
Their classification was first introduced in the second edition Monster Manuel. It will have, provided it’s a first print edition, a battle ensuing between a giant with a green cloak and a human warrior with a pike in the middle of a densely wooded forest. Unfortunately, I’ve had quite a time finding one of these editions. You might be able to find a reprint of the classification in the earlier Monstrous Compendiums as well. Good luck, hope this helps.
