Help me break in my 3.5 books! (3.5 Q&A)

So, my druid could turn into a wolf, but couldn't actually track anything? He could turn into a owl, but couldn't actually see any better in the dark?!? He could turn into a bat, but would require a sunrod strapped to his back to fly around in a dark cave?!?!?!

It is a bit disappointing.

It was probably a simpler solution than to try and split out another category of abilities, plus it balances this way with shapechange (a 9th level spell) which does grant all those abilities.

They should have put the "low light vision" and "scent" spells from MotW in and put them on the druid list; neither is in the book. Rangers get the darkvision spell but druids don't -- go figure.

I think this has already been posted, but:

Prereqs: martial weapon prof (all), able to cast 3rd level arcane spells.

BAB +1, saves Fort good, ref/will weak, d6 HD

level 1, get a bonus fighter feat.
Levels 2-10, get +1 arcane spellcasting

So Olgar,

Has Use Magic Device changed much? I know that's not very specific, but are the DCs still the same, and does it do all the same things? (activate blindly, emulate alignment, emulate spell ability, etc.)

It's effectively the same aside from no longer being exclusive; it is explained in more detail and specific DC's are given for scrolls (20 + caster level) and wands (20). The other DCs are the same.

What tricks are listed in the Animal Companion section of the DMG?

They're now in the PHB under Handle Animal, with training DCs:

Attack
Come
Defend
Down
Fetch
Guard
Heel
Perform
Seek
Stay
Track
Work

The DMG section now only has the notes for DMs handling companions -- a welcome adjustment; the infor should have been in the PHB all along.

I think you're misinterpreting

Olgar, I suspect that you're misinterpreting.

There are (at least in 3.0) four kinds of abilities--Spell-like, Supernatural, Extraordinary, and Unclassified.

Someone polymorphing / wild-shaping into a new form would get all Unclassified attacks and qualities, and any extraordinary attacks, but no extraordinary qualities, supernatural attacks, supernatural qualities, or spell-like abiltiies.

Feel free to thwack WotC if this is not the case, or if it is the case and they just explained it very very badly.

(FWIW, I think I'll call this fourth teer of abiltiies "Ordinary".)
