Help me break in my 3.5 books! (3.5 Q&A)

Duelist?

Can you confirm the changes to the Duelist PrC that you stated in your compiled (Possible) 3.5 revisions?

Specifically, do they really only get Precise Strike at 5th level (+1d6) and 10th level (+2d6)?

And does their INT bonus to AC only apply when wearing no armor and no shield (even bucklers)?

And it may not mean much by now, but thanks for the compilation you did, really helped a lot of ppl.

Does the new meteror swarm classify as an energy missile attack? Because making flame arrow a ray (BLAH!) brings down to one in the PH... good old Melf's.

Acid Orb (level 0, 1d3 acid damage) is also an energy missile. Maybe the're sticking to acid for that type of attack? :)

I don't think we ever got the new Ranger spell list. Notice any significant additions?

Summon Monster IV isn't new, but it can summon medium elementals now. Not great for combat but...

They *don't* get Polymorph (self) any more, which many will regret.

I'm not sure whether they used to get animal growth before, but they get it now - giving them a chance to keep their animal companion in the battle (+8 Str, +4 Con, -2 Dex, +2 Natural Armour, size increases 1 level)

Longstrider is a new 1st level spell for them and druids, +10 to movement rate for 1 hour/level.

Pair of followup questions, for Olgar or whomever.

So there's no difference between standing behind a counter, keeping a tree or another enemy between you and your foe, leaning around a corner to fire a hand crossbow, and waiting warily at an arrow slit? That sounds like way too much "simplification".

(I'm assuming that something like "total cover" still exists, yes? Or is "total cover" the only type available?)

Olgar gave the quick version because of time.

Basically, the rules talk about Cover (+4 to AC, +2(?books not with me) to Ref ST.

They then explain how some things give reduced cover (examples are small trees and narrow pillars in the DMG) which give half that benefit, and other things (arrow slits, etc) give improved cover (double the bonuses + improved evasion).

I've not got the books to hand, so I can't give the precise terminology, but basically there is standard cover, as Olgar said, which covers most of the situations of cover, but it tells you how to deal with other situations of lesser and greater cover too.

So no worries!

Thanks for taking the time out for more question Olgar, your work has been much appreciated by me and my gaming circle.

Here is a kinda pain of a question, but as you're looking through the spells any insight as to how many/wich ray/ranged touch spells on the Sor/Wiz list, by level. For example we know:

Level 0: Ray of Frost
Level 1: Ray of Enfeeblement
Level 2: Scorching Ray, Melf's Acid Arrow
Level 8: Polar Ray
Level 9: Meteor Swarm

It seems like they added a bunch of ranged touch spells but the list still seems a bit short.

-FDW

You could add level 6: disintegrate, level 4 dimensional anchor...

Can someone with the DMG tell me about Quaal's Feather Tokens? Is there more explanation about how they are used? I'm specifically interested in the tree token - has there been clarification on how it's used, where it can be activated, etc.

How is cold iron described? How is it maufactured?

Are there any specifics to how to craft an adamantine or cold iron weapon? (using the standard craft rules in 3.0 it takes almost 5 years to create an adamantine weapon).

What is the cost for these special material weapons? (mithral/adamantine/cold iron/silver)

Are they described in the PHB?

A couple early questions ...

DMG p283: "This iron mined deep underground, known for its effectiveness against fey creatures, is forged at a lower temperature to preserve its delicate properties. Weapons made from cold iron cost twice as much as their normal counterparts. Also, any magical enhancements cost an additional 2000 gp. ... Items without metal parts cannot be made of cold iton ... Cold iron has 30 hit points per inch of thickness and hardness 10."

I see no specific discussion of special material crafting times (special materials aren't in the PHB). Costs are in Compiled Revisions IIRC.

Cover: "Standard cover give +4 AC/+2 saves (with discussions of "soft" cover from creatures which don't help saves, distances from low walls, and the like). There are suggestions for other degrees, and there is total cover, but there is no longer a table of modifiers for 25%, 50%, 75%, 90%, total.

What are the descriptions given for the knowledge skills Dungeoneering, Geography, and Nature?

Dungeoneering: Aberrations, oozes, caverns, spelunking
Geography: lands, terrain, climate, people
Nature: animlas, fey, giants, monstrous humanoids, plants, seaasons & cycles, weather, vermin

Can someone with the DMG tell me about Quaal's Feather Tokens? Is there more explanation about how they are used? I'm specifically interested in the tree token - has there been clarification on how it's used, where it can be activated, etc.

Fan is clarified; the tree size is given. No further clarifications on use/where used (though it does imply the tree must be vertical).

Ranger spells -- this list has been in Compiled Revisions for a week at least.

Precise strike is correct. Canny defense: "When not wearing armor or using a shield ...". Just about every duelist special ability specifically mentions not using a shield.
