Help me buy X-Files!

I'm planning on starting to buy the X-Files DVD sets, but here is the thing...

I all but totaly lost interest in the series after it turned into the "Super Alien Government Conspiracy Show"... I prefered it back when it was exploring supernatural oddities and strangeness and stuff. Does anyone know what season was the last of that? I think 3 or therabouts, but...

I could contact a former coworker. She knew the X-Files front to back, could identify what episode you were talking about based on a few remembered details, give you a plot synopsis for every episode, and so on and so forth.

Quite a cool chick. Ex-jarhead, technophile, laid back, smart, personable, great laugh. Why any of her boyfriends haven't married her yet, I have no idea....

Given all that, tell me of an episode you remember where it turned from the type of show you liked to the government/alien conspiracy. I'll contact Tina, and ask her what season that was. Simple, eh?

The one that sticks to mind as the "point of no return" was the two-part episode where mulder pretends to commit suicide after "finding out his life was a chasing a hoax" or something... but actualy, it had gone south a bit before that. But until that point there was still some redeaming worth to it.

You should be safe up until around season 5. I don't remember a lot of four, but I know for a fact (was reading the box a few weeks ago) that five had a lot of the quirky supernatural oddity type episodes that you're looking for. Post-Modern Prometheus is one that jumps to mind, but I can't recall the plot offhand.

Hmm... never quite saw it in that light. The alien/guvmint conspiracy seems to permeate just under a third of the episodes of every season of the show, but the rest are relatively self-contained stories. Kind of like Stargate SG-1 which retains it's mythology throughout the series, but most episodes are complete in and of themself (unlike later Buffy, Xena, Charmed, et al.)

I bought up to season 5 of the DVD collections (I don't think season 6 is out yet.) That takes you up to the movie and, as far as I'm concerned, thats about when the show "jumped the shark." I won't be buying any more.

Of course my taste is suspect. I want them to put out the Lone Gunmen on DVD.
