D&D 5E Help me create a good Hobgoblin battle mage.

Corpsetaker

First Post
I'm looking for advice on creating a Hobgoblin battle mage using the stats from Volo's Guide to Monsters. Anyone have any build ideas? I want to take advantage of their proficiency in 2 martial weapons of my choice so I'm not sure if evoker would be a good idea.

It would be a bit of a MAD character because I want good Dex, Con, and Int if I go with a finesse weapon. If I go non finesse then add Str in there as well.

Do you at least have access to the SCAGtrips?

If so, go abjurer. You'll get the total hit point pool of a fighter, decent (though not amazing) armour, And the scagtrips will provide you with a decent melee attack that combines with your weapon proficiency well. And when you cast a major spell, you can save face to make sure it lands.

I want to stick with the theme of having gone to the Academy of Devastation so they favour spells that are perfect for the battlefield.

What spells do you mean by that? Battlefield control? Evocation? Just the best combat spells?
We can build you any kind of Gish you like. To take advantage of your martial weapons, all you have to do is make a character with some decent ruggedness, prefers the Scag cantrips to standing back and blasting ranged cantrips when not casting slotted spells, and some enhanced ability to concentrate on spells when hit. The rest varies on what you want to do with this character.
