I have thought about this before too. I figured the best way to sow chaos on the Realms would be throough an alien invasion. It starts with a meteor shower, hitting many of the major cities of Faerun (Waterdeep, Silverymoon etc..) Small meteors mind you, not extinction level event stuff. Then the aliens arrive...

I like this one! I was thinking about meteors myself. Namely one landing on Tilverton, since the players hate that place and all over Faerun. Think Armageddon.

I had the goddes Talona trick the PC's into releasing a killer virus upon the world. The kicker; the players didn't know what they did.

And imagine all the undead that arise from all the corpses everywhere!

I love it.

Hehe. I'm gonna tie this all together and spring it on my players next session, hehe.

I would just have Elminster create a spell so huge even he could not control.

Do you get Dungeon/Dragon magazine? Use the Githyanki invasion adventure in issues 100/309. I've heard that it works rrreeeaaalll well.

Loose Tharizdun and have him devour all the lame gods, cultures, and NPCs of the FR.

1. Go buy When the Sky Falls.
2. Have the Lovecraftian Gods awake on Faerun.
3. Cthulhu and Co. then call down several huge astroids to Toril.
4. While all the Epic powerplayers are dealing with the great old ones Toril get pummeled by astroids.
5. To top it all off... the astroids and the remainders of their bits give off negative energy. Hello Day of the Dead...

A perfectly FR canon (and a lot of fun) way to absolutely screw with the Realms is to use the kir-lanan, from the FRCS. Basically, these gargoyle-like humanoids were created from the death of gods in the Time of Troubles, and want to kill all the gods in revenge for their own pitiful existence.

So have them succeed.

Once the first god falls, the rest of them will swarm in, looking to exploit the loss with their own godly alliances and enemies (as the FR gods are a bunch of power-hungry meddlers anyway).

Then drop asteroids/unleash alien invasion/awaken Cthulhu/unleash the forces of the Blood War. Perfect excuse for negating potential divine intervention.

Good idea! I totally forgot about kir-lanan.

I ran a campaign set in the realms a short while ago based around the Sword coast. Anyway it all starts off pretty standard D&D fare with the players doing the usual quests, (sailing around in a sloop) with the only indicators that something was up being that the weather was slightly odd. So they end up in Waterdeep trying to get an audience in the palace when I have all hell break loose with earthquakes,volcanos and swarms of undead soldiers, real sinking of Atlantis stuff. What I had planned was that the kingdom of Thay(with the help of the god Talos) played their masterstroke and after years of planning invaded all of the major realm citys in one fell swoop with the PCs in the middle of the action. In short order the players felt like they were in a fantasy version of Nazi Europe and soon became pirate rebels fighting the Red wizard overlords.
Lots of fun, I also borrowed material from the Midnight setting.


Middle age is when you've met so many people that every new person you meet reminds you of someone else.

I think that would be the fastest way to deal with an entire planet. Then you can make the players do some serious spaceship/plane hopping
