Help me equip a monk

I've played a few monks in 3E and the one must-have item hands down is a ring of shocking blows. <snip> It is in the Sword & Fist splatbook.

I don't have S&F in front of me, but wouldn't that ring require a standard action to activate each time?

regarding the Ring of Shocking Blows, this is from the S&F errata:

p. 77, Ring of Shocking Blows:
change second sentence to read:
The wearer can make one touch attack each round that does 1d8+3 electrical damage.

just a heads up.

If you're really set on playing a Monk, why not make him a Dwarf or Half-Orc? You'll get the darkvision so many people are clamoring for for free.

If your party is getting into too many fights, because it attacks anything in the underdark, have you considered playing a Paladin? Not only will you get a chance to smite quite a bit of stuff down in the underdark, but your Detect Evil ability will save you from a ton of those fights.

Good idea Gnome Berzerker. I have a 1st level dwarven Monk for exactly that reason. In the end, I figured that the net increase to Con and the decrease to the dump stat (Cha) was worth more to me than the straight hitting power. And I also wanted the +2 racial bonus to saves versus spells and spell-like effects. The Monk speed bonuses will help offset the racial penalty in this area. Being a dwarf, I've made him a grappler.

Another alternative for the monk is to have them use their oh-so-flavorful weapons. My personal favorite is shuriken. Since they now count as ammunition, you can lower your costs significantly by only buying 10 of them (as you can only throw 9 a round at 9th level), and have them enchanted as Returning weapons. Ten shuriken with a +5 total would only cost 10,000 gp, +4 would be 6,400.

Edit: Nevermind. Unfortunately, the reclassification of shuriken as ammunition also means they are destroyed upon use. This makes them rather useless for the tactic I described.

That's actually pretty sad, now that I think about it. I had a character in a 3.0 game that was a shuriken thrower. It looks like he won't convert very well.

Gloves of fearsome grip definitely do stack with belt of giant strength. It's just like stacking the belt with the enhancement on weapons... both affect the end damage, but because they are different things getting enhanced, they stack.

Also, bracers of armor less than 5 are completely useless to anyone in a party with a wizard or sorcerer. Just have the caster cast mage armor on you. It's free, it lasts most of the day... why spend money on something so easily duplicated?

Monk's belt is cooler, if not strictly better, than a belt of giant strength.

I don't know if I'd get a ton of little stuff.. try to get one item as expensive as your DM would allow, and then use the rest of useful things.

I kinda like the skill enhancing items, they're fairly cheap (2500) at +5, and +5 is a big boost.

Mmmmm. I'm not as confident in that as you obviously are. To me, the gloves require the Bull's Strength spell to create and they provide an enhancement bonus to certain strength-based abilities. So they appear to me to be the equivalent of a restricted use gloves of giant strength (+10). I don't believe that they stack, and I doubt any DM would remain sane for long if they allowed them to do so.

But I must agree with you here!!

My half-dragon monk (just hit ECL 20!) swears by his Bracers of Striking. You can find these gems in MoF. Great item.

He finally got them up to +5 with sweeping, ghost touch, & impact.

Expensive as all heck since you have to enchant them as a double weapon. So basically double the normal cost. But worth it since they make him a nasty, living weapon. Plenty of wholesome goodness all around.

He's also got some great footwear, Sandals of the Leaping Tiger (from S&F) with Dex +6 and Tumbling +10 added on.

Doing double damage on a charge is just flat out wicked and wrong for a monk at high levels, BTW. ;)

Just a few ideas for your consideration. Obviously you can't have such expensive items yet, but a toned down version would fit well. Heck, I started these items out weak and built them up gradually as well with the help of my spellcasting friends. :)
