help me make a cool 6th level character

last week, my DM told us that we would be starting a new 6th level campaign set in the forgotten realms, since about 1000 ideas raced through my head, but i narrowed it down (not much though) to the following choices, please help, nay suggestions on different choices or just generally how the character can be made better would be appreciated, i need ideas for feats/skills/equipment/classes/race.here is the info

i want a character who is good in combat and has the four important skills (hide, move silently, listen and spot), so preferably could you weave them into this character.
the character will be played in the forgotten realms and is a harper.

level:6

races:any.preferably human or drow

classes:ranger, rogue, fighter or mix of them....please only one multiclass......maybe a prestige class.

abilities:10,16,11,14,6,11....+1 to any stat for 4th level

equipment:13000gp
i have a shortlist of items which includes:
boots of elvenkind
cloak of elvenkind
+1 studded leather
mithril breastplate
+1 wounding longsword
+1 shielding shortsword(home-made:3500gp)
rogues ring(home-made:2000gp)
if you think that any other items would fit well then please say.

books:PHB,MM,DMG,frcs,magic of faerun,lords of darkness,masters of the wild,sword and fist,song and silence,tome and blood,quintessential fighter,quintessential wizard,traps and treachery,no dragon/dungeon magazines

if you could post some rough outlines for this character that would be great.
thank you in advance.

6 levels?

[powergame mode ... activated]

If the DM will let you be a drow, take it. Drow's spell resistance is crazy undervalued for +2 ECL.

We now have four levels to play with.

You won't be ready to multiclass. So let's make you a rogue 2/ ranger 2. Take your longsword and change it into a shortsword. The reason is that when you take Weapon Focus and other weapon related feats, they'll apply to both weapons instead of just one. Plus, the longsword doesn't really do that much more damage to make it worthwhile.

Remember to advance in rogue AND ranger levels. You don't want to get the 20% experience penalty. By the time you are a rogue 4/ ranger 4 you should be albe to qualify for pretty much whatever you want.

For favored enemy, take human, elf, or whatever monster type you simply don't want to run into (DMs have a bad habit of removing monsters from their game world that their rangers have taken as a favored enemy)

Both rogue and ranger have sneaky skills as class skills. In fact, ranger is the only melee class that has them as class skills. Put one point in Wilderness Lore just to save face and then never look at that skill again.

When you get spells, do not take heals. If you take heals I will drive over to your house and write: "This guy had his ranger memorize heal spells! What a dummy!" all over your garage door in crayon. Memorize summon spells. As a part-time-rogue you're going to want to outflank monsters as much as possible and the summons will help you do that.

[powergame mode ... deactivated]

Or you could play a half-orc monk. They're fun, too.

this character will be a chaotic good artemis entreri wanna-be, he will use a wunding longsword and he will be very stealthy but good in melee combat, but he will be chaotic good, so he wont act like entreri and he is a harper.

i met up with my group today and it turns out this is the party so far:

svirfneblin ranger
human ranger
half-drow mage
human cleric
human psychic warrior

you may note the plethora of rangers and the absence of rogues, my idea so far is as follows:

str 14
dex 16
con 10
int 11
wis 6
cha 12

feats:
improved sneak attack:traps and treachery
quickstrike:traps and treachery
martial weapon proficiency:longsword
????? maybe weapon focus, improved intiative, dodge, quicker than the eye.

skills:85 points (max hide, bluff, move silently, listen, spot and search with some disable device and open lock.

hp:6+5d6
ac:10+3(dex)+4(+1 studded leather)+1 (dodge maybe)=17/18

equipment:
+1 studded leather 1175gp
+1 wounding longsword 8320gp 9495
rogues ring(+5 to hide and m.s) 2000gp 11495
potions,missile weapon etc.

this character is great for sneak attacks.
the iproved sneak attack feat means you get d8's for sneak attacks rather than d6's.the quickstrike feat means that you can make a melee attack on a creature which you have injured with a sneak attack.
martial weapon proficiency because the short sword on its own is dump and i am bored of always using rapiers.weapon focus would be good for more offensive power.improved initative means i catch more people flat-footed and hence more sneak attacks.
dodge is more defence which is my weak-point ATM.
quicker than the eye for extra sneak attack pain.

so which feats should i choose from that list and how could i increase my defence with out drastically changing this beast?

Obviously his first level should be Rogue, so you can get the maximum skills to start off.

I would take at least 3 levels of Fighter....get the extra feats in there.

Feats: Improved Initiative, Weapon Focus Long Sword, Weapon Specialization
