help me name my disaster

How about...

The Year of The Bad Stuff That Happened

The KT Extinction Event

The Day the Gods Called In Sick

Yeah, that's about the best I can do. Not helpful, really, is it?

When you said "stay away from stuff like 'the Cataclysm'" I'm not sure what you meant. You want something more specific, or more unique-sounding, or what?

more unique-sounding I suppose (though I will admit to some temptation w.r.t. "The Weiss/Hickman Effect" (ahhh memories...)).

thanks to you jokers I am now considering a shift from a humanity-under-siege/man vs. nature campaign to one of high comedy. thanks:)

the world is still very-much in flux as far as my design goes (which is somewhat bad given that we're already playing, but you do what you have to do). I have a general knowledge of the causes and circumstances of the event-under-discussion, but no one of relevance in the game world knows anything, so it's moot w.r.t. picking a name.

Make something up from scratch...

THE:
figgling
rugger
twib
steech
glarnabachk
yuloo

I figure that's how they came up with cataclysm and ragnarok in the first place...

I kinda like vaguely Oriental sounding long adjective phrase names. The Night of a Thousand Tears, or the Day Mother Earth Took Revenge on Her Children or something like that.

Then again, the most prominent cataclysm of our own early/pre-history is simply called The Flood, so maybe simple names work just fine after all.

It doesn't have a name.

To speak of it is taboo.

It brings bad luck.

It brings Death.

To speak of it is to invite destruction upon your house and all you hold dear.

A myth says that if every time anyone speaks openly of 'That which has No Name', then They might hear & return to wreck more devestation upon the land.

(That's going the Lovecraft route by the way).

So, name it Cthulhu, Azatoth, Hastur, Dagon; Lots of Great Old ones to choose from.

And, if your players insist on delving deeper into the past.... You can break out those CoC Sanity rules!

I actually like the simple names ("The Day" wouldn't be out of place given how I've named other things - I kind-of like it, actually).

"The <synonym for disaster>" or similar is what I'm mainly trying to stay away from.

Well, you could be a little more specific than The Disaster (or thesaurus entry for Disaster). The Breaking, or something like that. Although that'll make you sound like Robert Jordan.
