Help me staff a Keep

Some more info about this existing keep would be very useful. Is it even in dwarven lands, manned by dwarves? That would obviously make a big difference in turning it into a dwarven temple...

Well, I'm actually in the same game as Vague Jayhawk, and I'd have to say that it won't *only* be a temple of Moradin, no matter how much he wants it to be ;) . The party managed to defeat the old inhabitant (a rather pesky white dragon) and we were told we could simply hang on to the keep if we wanted. So now we each have a portion of it to do with as we will.... but to be fair, the dwarf is more interested than the rest of the party. I simply have my room adorned with some nice art depicting the three gods I respect/follow: Olidammara, St Cuthbert, and Heironeous (let's just say his background is "colorful").

But yeah, he recommended that I stop by and join the forums over here. I'm definitely interested in getting this keep staffed, though, so I like the suggestions so far.

Muzick, you little swishy-poke miscreant. You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake. After I am through ridding the world of evil I think I will start on you chaotic types.

If you had your way all of my 25 1st level followers would be bar-wenches. Only reason I associate with the likes of you is that you occasionally prove yourself to be useful in my quest to glorify Moradin.

I am glad you decided to join the conversation. You have a stake in this too.

The keep is in a mountainous region. It is rather cold half of the year, but not glacier cold. Although it is not high enough to be above the treeline the area has a short growing season. It is primarily a human land, but has a rather large dwarven population. The actual legal ancestral owner of the keep gave it as a payment for deeds we have done for her. The keep was abandoned for many years with the exception of a white dragon family and their frost giant bodyguards.

I understand that the main exports of the land are fish, furs, iron ore and frostbite. Dwarves know little about fish and furs, but I am sure that I can get a handle on the iron ore. I would like to make our little keep self-sufficient, perhaps profitable.

Thorin Bloodsworn; male 1/2 orc; War, Ftr or Rgr; LN

Thorin was rescued as a babe by a dwarven paladin during a raid on an orcish tribe, and left in the care of an elderly dwarven priest. He was raised to reject his orc blood, to believe in the supremacy of the dwarven people, and to be a weapon against their orcish foes.

Now a young adult half-orc, he is well-groomed, and outfitted in human-sized dwarven-made armor. His muscular build and facial features give away his orcish ancestry. However, he has pulled out his tusks with his own hands, as a sign of his rejection of that ancestry. He will gladly swear fealty to a Dwarven Cleric of Moradin, for the glory of the dwarven people and their gods, and the ruination of the orcish barbarians!

(Can you believe I came up with this character concept whitout even once thinking of Hellboy? :D)

My understanding of the history of the area is rather small. We are rather new to this part of the game world. From my understanding this is the old historic stronghold of founders of the area. It is now ours. My character's lawful anal tendencies had them run through all of the legalities involved in making the property legally ours. I made sure that every i was dotted and every t was crossed.

A few hundred years ago the inhabitants were killed by dragons and giants and rather than try to reclaim the keep, the family just relocated to the valley. A town of around 5000 has grown around that valley area and it is said that before the area hit on hard economic times the barrony was a predominant trade route.

The original stratigic importance of the keep is not known to me. It must have some great importance that we have not uncovered yet. The keep is a rather small. Not much more than a 4 story building with no outer wall and no outer buildings yet. However, it is really well made. Several magical enhancements have been detected. As far as I can tell the keep does not allow teleportation within it's walls and it is built on both the prime material and the ethereal plane barring ethereal travel in and out.

Pretty stout defenses for something that size. I have a feeling that there is something about this area that we have not found out yet.

The Gadfells: Erid, Dren and Toras. Identical triplets in their early 20's, the Gadfells are strong lads who fetch and carry and have some experience with horses. Their father was a local farmer who was also a horse thief. He was caught and hanged for his crimes, his farm taken by the local lord and the boys put out on the road. They've come to work for the keep, hoping to clear their family name. They mainly lay low and try not to come to any particular attention but they do pay attention. They do most of the scut work around the keep and nobody really notices a servant... Commoner 1

Midder is the keep's chief carpenter. He keeps the various doors and window frames in good condition, puts up fences and gates, makes sure posts are secure, etc. He's especially concerned with the various wooden frames for the keep. Expert 2.

Nan Pevesy is the ostler. She's uncommonly good with horses and keeps the Gadfells busy with various tasks around the stables. She herself will look after the horses for any important personages. Commoner 1

If you're building the place as a temple, you'll probably want a priest to run the temple while you're away
I totally agree. In fact, I'd say that either the 11th level cohort, or the 3rd level follower would have to be a Cleric, with the other one probably being someone with military expertise.

Out of the three 2nd level followers, one will need to be the steward/senechal who knows how to keep the place running. For the other two, I'd recommend some sort of craftsman (smith would be an obvious one), and a sergeant. Another Cleric or Adept might fit as well.

Thanks for helping me decide.

That is what I think that I will do. I have decided that the 11th level cohort will be a dwarven fighter/paladin. He will be the military leader of the keep and keep the place safe while us PC's are gone.

The 3rd level follower will be a cleric. I will distribute the 2nd level evenly as a butler smith and sergeant.

As for the first level I will make fighters and clergy and perhaps an accountant.

Those are the ones that I need to keep loyal and reliable. Other people (maids, stable boys, miners, I can just hire.

Muzic, do you need any specialized personnel?

Butler and Accountant? No... The word you are looking for is Castillian.
