Help me with a D&D tournament

Steven McRownt

First Post
I have signed up my group to a tournament here in Rome.
We will be in 4 or 5 players, i still don't know.

Anyway i have to build the group. 40.000 Px (Experience Points), no matter the number of players. There will be role playing, but they there will be -i think- a good number of fights, and then the final session will be one group versus the other in a duel.

Just PHB ( player's handbook) core classes. No PrC ( prestige classes). When we'll finish there will be the attributes selections but this is not hard at all.

I made something like 4 or 5 virtual groups with different selections of characters for each of the two possibilities, but still none satisfies me.

I will give you the last two groups for 4 players and the last one for 5.

1.
Human Bard 4th level
Dwarf Cleric 7th level
1/2Elf Monk 4th level
Human (or halfling) Ranger 1st/Thief 3rd level

2.
Cleric 5th
Paladin 5th or Cleric 3rd/Paladin 2nd
Fighter 4th/Ranger 1st
Ranger 1st/Thief 3rd/Barbarian 1st

3.
Gnome Wizard(illusionist) 5th
Human Paladin 4th
1/2 Orc Monk 5th
Human or 1/2 Elf Thief 3rd/Ranger 1st
Dwarf Cleric 4th

Help me, please!

Note Edit: I've added some little clarification after Sodalis rant on strange simbols. Hope that's clearer now.

i have no idea what those squigly little symbols mean, but i can offer some advice...
all are MC a/b
the first class (a) is the one you should focus on, and the second class (b) is to have a more rounded char

a rogue/ftr is better for combat purposes. he has an expanded weapon list, armor list, and an added feat.

a rogue/rgr is better is you have a strong rogue. with dualielding, he can get a lot more done is you have someone flank and use him to sneak attack a couple times a round. the skill points and list dont hurt him much

spell casters should nto MC- because that takes away at how many spells they can cast-a nd at higher lvls, they lose the more poweerful spells.

Since you are playing a low level game- you should choose the race that best fits the class (its favored clasS) or the one that has the attribut bonus for that class. At lower lvls- that extra +1 on saves really make a difference.

What is the purpose of the tournament? If it is style, then I would not say anything because you should do whatever you feel is fun for you. But if you are supposed to hak your way through a dungeon then I would say have the standard group- a rogue, cleric, fighter type, pure caster (prolly sorc) that way, you have all the bases covered.

The group that i would go with is:
1 dwarven barb/ftr
3 dwarven clerics.

the con bonus will make it so that you will have bno problems with HP. the clerics will make sure you will have enough healing- and at the same time offensive spells. The barb will be your main melee offense- and the wall- o- full plates will make it impossible for anything to penetrate...

at these low levels, the low AC of the barb will not be such a problem.

Thanx for the idea of 3 cleric and 1 barbarian all of four dwarf. It could be a good idea for a group in a tornament. Unluckily at least a couple of my players doesn't have the role-playing abilities to play dwarf. They are quite new to RPGs in general and i must say they can't go further than Human (and 1/2 humans).

And i have no idea of what you're talking about. I checked my post, and it seems to be right....please clear that thought!

note edit: uhmmm.... i realized know that i used Px instead of Xp(s). Sorry Sodalis, if that's was the fault let me know...
