Being more specific would help. Do you want to be excel at ranged combat, melee combat, spellcasting, grappling, dealing damage, social skills etc. The first step in character creation is to come up with a concept of what you're after. That'll help us help you as well.

Well Actually I need to come up with Several backup characters, as we are playing Rappan Athuk, which is the Dungeon of Graves.

Currently I am playing a Level 11 Wizard, which has survived the longest because of Silent Dim Doors and Teleports. I was considering changing to a different character, or need a backup character.

I was hoping for melee (as there are not many situations for ranged combat) I have been playing too many spellcasters recently so I do not want to be a primary spellcaster anymore, grappling is good, but we do have a monk of insane grappling, Dealing damage would be great. Social skills would not really be used.

Equipment:
Weapon: +2 (whatever you fancy) (8000 gp + weapon cost + 350 gp for MW)
Armor: +1 Medium Fortification Mithral Full Plate (26,500 gp)
Shield: +1 Animated Heavy Steel Shield (9170 gp)
Other: Cloak of Resistance +2 (4000 gp)

This leaves 980 gp minus weapon base cost left for various mundane adventuring equipment.

How about a wildshaping barbarian? Half-Orc Barbarian 1/Druid 9. (Eventually Barbarian 2/Druid 18)

Feats: Natural spell, Maybe Power Attack->Improved Bull Rush, Extend Spell

Basically... the way it works is you wildshape into a Dire Lion, cast Animal Growth on yourself, then Rage. Whee!

Most equipment won't do you much good. Wild Hide Armor +1 will set you back 16k, and Druid's Vestments for 10k.

Only two (T-W-O) magic items at 10th level!? Now that's a limitation!

Barbarian/Fighter is probably a good idea, with Power Attack, Combat Expertise, Improved Trip and some other stuff, fighting with a Falchion. Nothing fancy, just a solid meleer.

Of course, you could try some fancy stuff with Combat Reflexes and Karmic Strike.

Or for Survivability make a Monk 2/Fighter 2/Paladin 4/Pious Templar 2 with good Cha and Divine Might.

Yeah, the Divine Feats are fun. If he wasn't limited to Core I'd recomend a Paladin type with Divine Might and Divine Shield. With a good Cha, whoosh, AC, attck, and dmg are through the roof.

Ah, damn, missed that Core Books limitation, that makes the suggestion somewhat less useful, I suppose.

A Monk 2/Fighter 4/Paladin 4 is still pretty good, tho.

Oops missed the 2 magic item limitation...
Well, I'd go for armor/weapon... sux givin up the animated shield, but oh well.

A pure Cleric is also good (no, really ).

Bead of Karma, Extend Spell, Quicken Spell and you can put up some nice buffs for yourself and your allies, too. Best thing is, you do not need magic weapons and armor.
