I know that this question has been asked before, but please oblige me anyway.

Do you admit that you game to non-gamers? Why or why not? To what extent?

I admit it, but, not frequently. If it sort of comes up in conversation, I will tell people, but, I rarely forward the information without any sort of prompting.

Yes, if it comes up, I don't mind saying I'm a gamer. It probably helped get me a job, because I could say I helped run a small press publishing company (ooh, impressive, thinks my interviewer; what'd you publish?), putting out rulebooks and supplements for D&D (huh, that's kinda weird, thinks my interviewer; what do you mean?). And then I explain, since I've gotten good at explaining D&D to non-players, especially the business aspect, since people seem to respect a company that sells games more than they respect a person who plays the games.

But yes, I never have a problem with saying that I game, unless by the person's previous comments I suspect it will just cause an argument. That doesn't happen much anymore, though.

My old Creative Writing advisor, though, still thinks my fiction is too D&D-ish. I try to explain to him, "At least it's like a D&D game, and not a D&D novel."

Yes. I have told a full classroom of people that I game in a presentation to the class. The speech delivered was roughly five minutes in length. I explained that D&D was a game that could be played by a group of friends, that the players acted as characters in a long-running story, and their actions determined how the plot evolved.

Nobody understood it. I spent nearly twenty minutes answering questions from that.

I don't hide it but I don't advertise it either.

I currently have Draconomicon wallpaper on my computer at work and I occationally get questions about it but I don't wear "gamer" t-shirts or tell random people about my current character. Not that I think my workplace would have a real problem with it since it feels like half of the people play WoW.

I actively promote the gaming hobby. I work as a waiter in a place where I can wear what ever I want to work and it is almost always a gaming t-shirt. I have no problem telling people that I am a gamer and often bring it it up in coversation where appropriate. All of my friends and coworkers know that I play rpgs and that I am involved in running the local con.

Yes.

Why do I do it?

It's my hobby. Sometimes it's my job. It's part of who I am. So it just makes sense to me to talk about it, otherwise I'd be hiding a part of me that is important as to why I am who I am.

Note that I'm just saying how it is to me. Others will not talk about their gaming, and will have several good reasons not to do so. Either is cool with me.

Cheers!

/M

As others have said, I don't bring it up, but if someone asks I don't deny it. I may lump RPGs in with other games under a general "Gaming" category. After all, I like a lot of other kinds of games too.

Right. I don't generally discuss it amongst many non-gamers, but have no problem talking about it (in generalities) if asked. (I'm very conscious not to bore people by going into too much detail.) I certainly won't lie and deny playing, but its not a big focus of normal social conversation.
