Help My Campaign: Gluttony!

Give any Gluttony-based creatures the ability to Swallow Whole. Maybe even the barghest ability to gain strength from eating creatures.

I wrote up both sin- and virtue-based outsiders.. lemme see if I can dig them up. I also did a conversion of the sin dragons from Dark Ages: Mage, but might have lost that in my last HD format.

On the forebearance/fasting issue you could stretch the treck through the jungle over an extended period and give the place a unique planar quality of barring spells and abilities that stop people needing to eat (summon food spells, ring of sustenence). Perhaps modify the rules for starving (actually I just relaised that I don't know if there *are* rules for starving) so that the PCs get serious penalties from a craving hunger that develops, take it to the point that they WANT to eat food offered them or go hunting for food. I'd probably make any food they were carrying rot faster too. That all sets a backgroud for virtuous fasting.

As for how they can actually use forbearance to beat GLUTTONY, hmm here is a rather RADICAL idea, but it's all I can think of:

They must allow themselves to starve to the point of losing conciousness rather than eat food they know to be tainted. If a character allows this to happen they gain a special version of the ghost template (with true seeing to pierce the 'paradise' illusion and possibly some bonuses or abilities against evil) to represent that they have left behind bodily hungers and thus have shed their bodily weakness and are pure manifest spirit. Their body goes into a state of suspended animation and they exist outside of it, they can then confront GLUTTONY and not be affected by any physical effects he might have tried to use on them (I'd give Gluttony fatigue and enervation powers that would not work on ghosts and the power to do constitution damage (also now useless)). Though the fight is easier it is still not easy, without going through the process of becoming souls the PCs would be weakened by hunger and also vulnerable to more of Gluttony's special abilities. As very few PCs would be willing to actually allow their character to die via starvation you should probably manage to weave clues into the story or make it clear they can either DIE or SIN so they really understand that in this context eating is the 'wrong' thing.
Slaying Gluttony unlocks the carcerian prison and restores the PCs to their bodies fully restored.

Making PCs kill themselves as part of the story does seem cruel though :p

I think gluttony should be a advanced fiendish gnoll fighter with swallow whole tacked on. Or possibly a Klurichir (fiend folio) with fewer hitdice, less abilities, but swallow whole added. Those guys look like... this:

klurichir (demon)

I always thought of the Nalfeshnee (the demon) as the essense of gluttony. Although the current picture in the 3.5 MM doesn't give it the right "feel." You may even want to give it some kind of wand or sceptre that can control hunger levels in creatures around him. Nalfeshnee also have true-seeing on constantly and, despite the illusion, would always see through it to its truth.

It's also CR 14.

arken has my new favorite idea.

The ghost, body, thing is very cool.
It does kind of set up a TPK though.

A good way to make the choice truly moral would be for the fruit to be made of the souls of people, souls which would be irrevocably destroyed if the PCs eat them. (otherwise its just "fruit that somebody says is bad")

Perhaps having them encounter a ghost who's already undergone the process might be a good idea.
Maybe the ghost's body has been consumed by the devourer but because the ghost's soul is not within it it can not be consumed? If they kill gluttony they can get the ghost's body back.

Thanks Graf :D

Yes, I agree there's probably a need to make it quite clear eventually taht the whole 'spirit' thing would haappen. A person that has been eaten could make a fascinating NPC too, really interesting :).

IT's that time again! :)

Since you guys rocked the house on Lust (which my players are still loving), I've come to ask for help again, this time for Gluttony. Here's the usual list of things:

1) What plane should Gluttony be on? I'd like it to be an endless, fetid, icy marsh of some sort ideally....something like a landfill of sewage. IF all else fails, I'll stick it in the Abyss, but is there someplace cooler?

2) Color = Orange, Animal = Pig, Planet = Jupiter. The more these can be incoroporated into the monsters, the better. Ideally, I need something of around CR 14-15 to be an effective BBEM for Gluttony. What monsters already fit this type? What can be made to fit it? Also consider Cerberus...what kind of three-headed canines can I find to hit that CR range abouts (around 10 for the minor foes is fine)?

And if you're interested in how Lust went in detail, I'll be happy to tell ya. :)

yes please tell of the lust encounters

Location... jubilex's [demon lord of slimes] layer.

foe .. orange nafleshe with an oversized mouth it can swallow people whole with maybe attended by some devil swine [were pigs that can charm with gaze and in human form they look like Hoggish Greedly from captain planet].. Jupiter angle...extra strong javalins of lightning maybe....[convinces pc's to close to swalloing range]
