Help my "cousin" Bob fit in?

Creative use of magic mouth spells could help as well. Pay someone else to cast them as its your barred school.

Also, Enchantments can be your friend. You might be able to make people like you so much that they are willing to look the other way about your strange "cousin."

I don't think magic mouth would deceive people for that long would it? The spell only allows for a set sentence I believe and having to rely on someone else to cast it for me is another downside, not to mention the cost.

Enchantments are a good idea in certain situations and I intend to make best use of them however I'm more looking for ideas that will help all the time until I am of sufficient power to use powerful magics.

Thanks anyway though. :)

If you are interested in having a skeletal follower, you might look at the variant for necromancers in Unearthed Arcana. It lets you swap out your familiar for a skeletal follower that improves as you advance in level. This almost sounds exactly like what you are looking for. If you still wanted a familiar, you could later take the feat that grants you a familiar from Complete Arcane.

As far as walking around town with a skeleton... a portable hole is the ideal answer, but its unlikely that you will have that at your level. When I played a necromancer my group came to the conclusion that it's not worth the effort and kept the skeleton(s) outside town stashed somewhere.

Another notion is to take a level of sorcerer and get a couple of illusion spells to help with the ruse. This makes you less powerful as a caster though, so it may not be worthwhile.

I am currently playing in a homebrew campaign as a mage and my DM is allowing me to use a skeleton as a type of cohort, (I intend to summon a normal one and then take the leadership feat when I can to then make him more powerful)....

How does taking the leadership feat make a cohort more powerful? I am confused.

It lets you have a cohort, within certain limits, but how does it make your cohort more powerful?

how does it make your cohort more powerful?
Maybe because instead of just a 2 HD skeleton, it's a skeleton with class levels?

It doesn't make cohorts more powerful, it'll just make this skeleton more powerful by turning it into a cohort.

That was what I was getting at, thanks Felix. :)

Greetings…

Well, I imagine it isn’t so much what you do, is how well you do it. So, first of all, you’re going to have to disguise Bob. Long heavy cloak with a hood. Maybe wrap him up with bandages and clothes. Make him look like Nash the Slash. I don’t know how your DM would rule it, but considering that your skeleton doesn’t have eyes, does it really matter if it’s hood hangs down over it’s face?

But yeah, I suggest you go out and purchase an item to help you magically disguise him.

(Say, does anyone know why Magic Aura is a spell you can’t use with Permanency?)

“You will have to forgive my cousin Bob there. When he was young he had leprosy. Quite disfiguring. Be he’s a rather humble person for it. Bob, make sure that they horses are hobbled for the night would you? That’s a good lad.

Magic Mouth, with the command trigger set for when you tell him to introduce himself:

"Bob no speak Common!"

:p

When a new PC joined our party, he had an animated teddy bear. Kids loved to play with it. It was very cute when it followed the PC's commands. The thing is that he was a necromancer and the teddy bear had an animated skeleton of a monkey inside. This was back in 2nd ed. when the complete book of necromancy had a 1st level spell that could animate a small animal corpse/skelleton.

So, for Bob, add some stuffing between its bones to simulate muscles and wrap him up in a burka.
