Help of Epic Proportions

Though it sounds great I am a bit hesitant as to touch city of shade... My thoughts on that place is that a all to powerfull wizard attempts to cast a new improved Karsus avatar and this time mystra dies and he becomes the god of magic, then he misuses his power and the balance is off...

But, why's the Anauroch engulfing Cormyr ?? Is it expanding or something???

Biggest Epic Tip.

Don't target the PC's.

Target Stuff.

You don't take on Khelben, You blow up bits of Waterdeep.

You don't try to kill Elminster, you poison every well in Shadowdale.

At Epic levels, it really has to switch to more story and less hack/slash. It takes a lot of work to get encounters tight & that still just winds up taking 5-6 rounds (which might take 2 hours to resolve).

The good point is you are in FR. FR is about the only setting where you have a lot of Epic level characters running around.

THis is me trying to reply to all thoose who wrote interesting stuff...

Since I am new at this online thingey can anyone tell me what a BBEG is.
And what the heck is Blackdirge ?? (Or who the heck)
And I am not out to kill my pc's, my gaming philosphy is that you as the DM has to provide the challenges and the negative karma when appropriate, and the PC's have to stand up to whatever you give them to shape their destiny...

.

BBEG: is Big Bad Evil Guy. Its lame, but people here on En World LOVE acronyms.
RAW: Rules as written,
RBDM: Rat Bastard DM, also known as screw the players.
There are about 5009435732 more. If there is a new book coming out it will be an acronym before the end of the day

Blackdirge, no idea

What ever you want in your game that cool.

Blackdirge? That's me. :)

I have a bit of a rep (justly deserved) of making nasty suped up monsters for DMs looking to up the ante in their game.

I have a "Suped up Monster" column on this board that you can access here:

http://www.enworld.org/article.php?c=10

Or my older suped up monster thread, which you can look at here:

http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=44315&highlight=BLACKDIRGE

I occasionally take requests as well, although i don't have near the time i used to for such things. But if you have a specific monster in mind, I can at least point you in the right direction.

Go for a planar field trip.

The PCs are suped up, granted, but then many planar beings are pre-suped up before adding on any class levels. That is the big mistake of dealing with planar beings in general. All of them should have a few class levels. A Balor without levels is little more than a Balor Commoner 1 (or perhaps Warrior 1). Give it, say, 10 or 15 levels in Fighter and it becomes a bit more interesting. Or maybe 3 levels in fighter, 3 levels in sorcerer, and about 5-10 levels in the Eldritch Knight PrC. What about a Pit Fiend Rogue 5 / Assassin 5 / Shadowdancer 3?

Once they've reached epic levels, its time to leave the playground (ie: the Prime) and move on to a setting where their powers are not quite so impressive. I'm sure there must be feats - perhaps epic feats - that allow spells &/or special abilities to bypass little things like Energy Immunity, Critical Immunity, Magic Immunity (or high SR), Mind Blank, True Sight, etc. If not, just rule them in - as Monster feats, so your players cannot (immediately) make use of them. Or perhaps an epic plague has been unleashed on faerun that has SR vs remove disease or other attempts at curing it. Worse, it reduces the SR of all those infected, and it is epically difficult to not succumb to it once infected. The PCs are called upon to help out . . . .

Or perhaps that vast glacier up north melts suddenly, causing a massive flood that wipes clean half of the landscape north of the lake of steam - and the PCs have to help with the aftermath - searching for survivors, rare artifacts or relics now lost, etc. Due to AO's decrees the deities cannot hop down to the Prime to help out, so it is up to the PCs and NPCs to help rebuild the northern half of the map. But the Phaerimm and Shades are taking advantage of the situation to try to spread and rebuild their former empires, and the Drow are starting to arise again (those that weren't flooded out). Perhaps the flood, in fact, is forcing many beings formerly underground to come up - as perhaps as much as half of the underdrak is temporarily flooded for the next few months or years - if not permanently. So mindflayers, Ilmaskeri (spelling?), etc are all arising to the surface, fighting each other on the way and while now above, and at the same time fighting those already on the surface - or seeking to spread into "their" areas. Maybe the Mulharand will be willing to help - or perhaps they are too busy maintaining their borders against incursions. Perhaps the flood washed away sediments covering ancient cities long forgotten.

See how a single event - if major enough - can all but write a potential campaign hook or three? Cormyr, Ice Dale, Waterdeep, etc - all are gone or so terribly damaged as to be in severe disrepair for years or decades to come. Halrua and many southern lands are now amongst the most advanced (along with the Mulharond) - their northern cousins vanished or ruined (for now?). All sorts of opportunities exist. Saints need to help those less fortunate, the magister will need to help out as well after the catastrophy, and likely their companions will have to follow along.

So there you have it: two ideas to help your epic campaign: planar field trip meeting class leveled fiends, etc, and an epic disaster and later recovery program. Have fun! :D

Hey there! :)

30th-level shouldn't be too much of a problem to challenge, even min/maxed powergamers.

However, the first thing to learn is that your PCs can probably handle Challenge Ratings equal to double their average level.

So here are the following average CR's you should consider for your 30th-level group

Cannon Fodder = CR 13-17 (EL -4)

Footsoldiers = CR 18-22 (EL -2)

Elite Footsoldiers = CR 27-33 (EL +/-0)

Henchman = CR 40-50 (EL +2)

Nemesis (Big Bad Evil Guy) = CR 54-66 (EL +4) This would be a very tough battle with perhaps one or more PC deaths.

So lets say you wanted the main villain to be Bane. The Greater God version of Bane in the FR books is roughly CR 66 ish, which is borderline nemesis (although some of the Deities & Demigods abilities are a tad broken so be careful.

http://www.immortalshandbook.com/freestuff7.htm

I'm not sure I would use Bane though. Iyachtu Xvim might be a better choice as the Party nemesis.

As you can see from above, someone like Fzoul Chembryl is little more than a footsoldier in such a conflict. Beholders would be little more than cannon fodder. Which means you probably need some unearthly visitors and creatures to give the PCs a worthy challenge.

The Five Fingers of Death could be Lawful Evil Infernals, Elite Footsoldiers of Bane.

The PCs might face Gibboring Orbs, or Paragon Beholders.

Fzoul Chembryl could become the Proxy of Bane, guarded by a force of blackguard death knights.

Iyactu Xvim could perhaps be sent by Bane (yes I know they don't have a great relationship but would he deny his father?) as his henchman, to dispatch the PCs.

Theese players have used loopholes in the rules to become overpowered

Here is your problem. End the game, end them, they do it again, end the game, end them. If they want to play the loophole game, tell them to find a different GM.

Or attack them using pun-pun, they want loopholes, give them the biggest friggin loophole ever made.

Feegle Out
