Help on a rogue?

kapa

First Post
I've started playing D&D not too long ago and I've finally decided to play a rogue since I've finally backed off a bit from the bashing/artillery spelling (warmage was fun!). Could I have some suggestions for a rogue build? I rolled some pretty high numbers this time and I'm entering the game as a Lv. 12 rogue. My numbers are 18, 18, 16, 16, 16, 14. THe DM is running an evil campaign, if that helps in any way.

You do not roll with standard 4d6 drop lowest, right? :uhoh:

For a fairly straightforward approach, when you also want to have the character work well in combat, I would simply go Human Fighter 4 / Rogue 8 with Str 16+2 Dex 18 Con 18+1 Int 16 Wis 16 Cha 14 (the +X are for the level ups at 4th, 8th, 12th) and Two-Weapon Fighting, Improved Two-Weapon Fighting, Weapon Focus (Short Sword), Weapon Specialization (Short Sword), Combat Expertise, Improved Disarm, Improved Trip, Improved Initiative, etc.

Some ideas

Human Ranger 2/ Rogue 3/Assassin 7

Take Humanoid (humans) as your favored enemy.

You have two attacks, +6d6 sneak attack damage, and a handful of utility spells.

I'd likely take the archery focus (composite longbow with high strength + sneak attack + favored enemy bonus + poison/death attack for the win;)) path but the two weapon path is also fine.

Which books can you use?
Do you want a "level 12 rogue" or do you just want a "roguish" level 12 character? (For example, would you mind assassin levels?)

What kind of rogue do you want? locks and traps guy, acrobat guy, sneaky scout guy, charm your pants off con artist guy, indy jones find and decipher strange stuff guy, two-weapon fighting combat guy, etc.?

In general, put the 2 18s in Dex and Int (you only have light armor, and you can never have too many skill points). Put the 14 in Chr unless you are going for the charm the pants off guy. Then make the choice between human (extra feat, even more skill points) and some race that gives you a dex bonus (halfling even gives you a size bonus as well, for example)).

What books are you allowed to use?

Anyhow, you might want to try straight rogue (maximize your skill points, get those rogue special abilities).

If you are the goto skills guy and others have filled the combat niches, you could try something like:

Human, max out: Hide/MS/Spot/Listen, Search/DD/OL, Tumble, UMD, Bluff/Sense Motive, Balance, and Sleight of Hand. Get that Rogue ability at 10th that lets you take 10 on 7 of your skills (Tumble, Bluff, Sleight of Hand, Search, DD, Balance, OL) even when distracted, threatened, in combat, etc..

Improve Dex at 4th and 8th (and 12th, I guess), try for a mithral chain shirt (easy to get at 12th I imagine), goggles of darkvision (or belt of dwarvenkind), & a sword of subtlety.

For feats, I would recommend: Staggering Strike at 9th (from Complete Adventurer), Quick Reconnoiter at 3rd (same book), Improved Diversion at 1st (same book), Combat Expertise at 1st, Imrpoved Feint at 6th, and Combat Acrobat (from PHB II) at 12th.

I would recommend substituting in the Rogue Alternate ability Disruptive Attack (replaces Improved Uncanny Dodge) from PHB II, so you have something to do vs. undead and constructs and those with heavy fortification, and maybe spell sense for trap sense (from Complete Mage, require a skill point in Knowledge (Arcana), but you have skill points to spare)).

Hope this helps.

I think we're allowed to use any book as long as it's 3.5

I think I'm trying to build a combat oriented rogue but the campaign is cityscape so sneaking/traps would be pretty useful too I guess

I wouldn't mind multiclassing

and I rolled using the 4d6 drop lowest right in front of the DM, he called me a bastard haha

Our party so far is a archivist/wizard, a binder, a sorcerer =/ err...maybe I should go another class?

If there is noone else who dares to go into melee, a rogue might actually suffer a bit in combat situations. ;)

For a melee Rogue type, I'd suggest the Nightsong Enforcer Prc from Complete Adventurer. It's full BAB and D8 hit die are extremely attractive to almost any rogue.

Rog 3/Hexblade 3/Nightsong Enforcer 6

+11 BAB, saves 4/9/6 + Cha vs. spells, evasion, mettle, opportunist, +4D6 sneak attack, and several skill bonuses.

Considering the rest of the party, I side with Thanee once again (nice pic...) on the Ftr4/Rog... perhaps assassin added. That class combo used to be the most versatile and efficient in combat I've seen in most of my games.

Hmm, high Int... Swashbuckler might be nice, sadly it's such a puny class. Wasn't there a class that allowed your Int bonus on AC? Duelist. Right. But didn't stack with armour...
Invisible Blade (Int bonus to AC maxxed at 5!) or Master Thrower perhaps? Get Int to 20 somehow and get those 5 levels Invis Blade together with 4 fighter levels and 3 rogue levels.
