Help on History Essay, er... kinda, anyway, as such.

In the Desert War in 43' a single New Zealand captain convinced an italian officer to surrender by saying the unit was surrounded by allied tanks.

A german officer came upon them even as the officer was removing the bolt from his rifle.

You can see my dilemma.

You don't want to focus on the actual conflict itself, but the personalities, decisions and deeds of the leaders and their cronies behind the war itself.

Who could ever forget the comments by Bagdad Bob?

Take a look at the activities of the Nazi Leadership in March to April 1945.

The Soviet leadership in June 1941. Refusing to admit that German preparations for an Eastern war are well underway. Even after the invasion had began!

You just have to admire the way these regimes have created systems which so encourage veracity to such an extent...

Ask, and ye shall receive. The most ludicrous and idiotic war ever... I present thee... The Football War!

Well be fair, it was a World Cup qualifier, the single biggest* sporting event on the planet! If it had merely been a Copa America qualifier, now that would have been stupid. :)

And I think a lot of blame must be attached to the Honduran team, who got so upset by being fire-bombed out of their hotel the night before the match (I mean, sure, the entire hotel burned down, but none of them actually died!) that they lost the second match, thus setting things up for the sudden-death third and final match that triggered the war. (And I'm sure they felt that after they had all nearly burned to death in an arson attack, and had managed to make their way to a second hotel, it was unfair for the Salvadoran fans to keep them awake for what remained of the night by constant singsongs outside the replacement hotel - but hey, they were probably just having fun!)

There's an entertaining account here: http://ldbelveal.net/articles/futbol_war.htm

*The Olympics are bigger, but they are spread over two dozen or so sports, each of which can have many winners - whereas with the World Cup, only one country, and one team, goes home as the winner.
