Help Pricing Magic Items

I'm trying to create some new magic items but I'm having problems with the pricing. I'm using the DMG as a guidelines but I can't always back into the costs that they give to certain items while using table 7-33.

For example, the 'circlet of persuasion' grants the bearer a +3 bonus to his Charisma score as per the spell Eagle's Splendor.

The caster level of this item is 5th and it requires eagle's splendor, a 2nd level spell. There is no discussion of a command word in the item's description so I would assume that the effect lasts as long as the person wears the circlet. There is also no discussion of charges.

So, following that logic, on table 7-33, a "use-activated or continuous" item has a base price of:

Spell Level x Caster Level x 2,000 GP. By that logic, the 'circlet of persuasion' should have a Base Price of: 2 x 5 x 2,000 = 20,000 GP. Add to that the footnote on table 7-33 which indicates that if the item duplicates a spell with a duration of 1 minute/level then you multiply the cost by 2. So, in this case, 20,000 x 2 = 40,000.

Yet the actual item is priced in the DMG as only 4,500.

So, what am I doing wrong?

I can't find the breakdown too but :
circlet of persuasion doesn't reproduce a spell effect, as it give wearer +3 on Cha based skill check, not on Cha Stat nor it reproduce Eagle splendor (cloak of charisma)

so it should be a competence bonus item (bonus square x 100 gp)
but it give 3 x 3 x 100 : 900 gp
this is to give +3 to only one Skill.

circlet of persuasion give +3 to EVERY cha skills !
just check there is 8 Cha skills ....and 900 x 8 don't give us 4500

so I really don't know, certainly have to brekdown things another way but can't find it !

Perhaps they only meant for it to affect 5 Cha-based skills?

What does Persuasivness have to do with Use Magic Device anyways?

Okay, that does help quite a bit since I was obviously reading the item description incorrectly.

How about an item that gives +2 to attacks, damage, saves, skill checks and AC to all allies within 30' (kind of reproducing some of the bardic inspirational abilities)? How would one go about pricing that?

Aren't there higher level clerical spells that give several bonuses to all allies in a range? I would suggest prayer, but it looks like you want even more than that.

Sure, that totally might work. Where I'm getting tripped up is just in general trying to figure out the prices. I price the items according to the formulas in the DMG and on Table 7-33 but 9 times out of 10 I come up with a price that's a lot more than what the DMG prices the same item at. And, for some of the items I want to create, such as something that adds a bonus to a person's Leadership score, I can't find an equivalent item in the DMG to use as a template. There are a few but they all also do something else so I can't figure out how much of the price is coming from the leadership bonus.

But 900 x 5 does give us 4500. I think its much like uses/day compared to at will. 5/day is priced the same as useable constantly, so something that gives competence bonuses across the board for a specific set of stat-based skills is also modified by 5.

For the inspirational item, you can base it off Good Hope. +2 morale bonus on saving throws, attack rolls, ability checks, skill checks, and weapon damage rolls. 3rd level bard spell, so 3(spell level)*7(minimum bard level)*2000(continuous item)*2(duration 1 min/level) = 84,000 gp.

I was on the same thinking as not all character gets skills rank in the 8 different skills ! so they quote as 5 (almost half+)

concerning Use Magical device : the answer is yes Cha helps as you're to fool the items and use it not normally allowed to !

bye

Thanks for your help, everyone! I knew that by posting here I'd get some help on this. It seems that pricing magic items is a little more "gut instinct" than I thought at first, but I really do appreciate all of the help.
