help! the sword needs to die!!!!!!

Metagamely speaking, I see two possibilities:

- The sword isn´t a plot device, just a powerful cursed magic item you stumbled upon. In this case, it´s perfectly safe in the bag. Or you could hide it very well, and the chances of seeing it again aren´t big enough to warrant the pains of destroying it.

- The sword is a plot device. In this case, it won´t be easy to destroy, and there´s the possibility that there´s a very specific way to do it. The thing you do is doing some legend lore.

Or the DM didn't invoke one (more likely IMO). With a 20 ego there are 2 negative levels, and it sure seems like this item is in the 20+ ego range.

Regardless, since it is almost a given that it is a storyline/plot device just go with the ride and don't try to rules-lawyer yourself out of the enjoyment. Without even knowing the DM I would guess he has put some forethought into this item's reason for being and where it will lead your group as well as how to get rid of it, if that is required.
"Oh, don't even bother, the DM will save us" as a routine part of plots has made for some of the worst games I have ever played in. Being "along for the ride" is not something I want to be doing when I'm out to play a roleplaying game. If I wanted that, I'd watch a DVD. At least then I can skip the boring bits where the director strokes his... ego.

In short - if the DM has a plan, I don't want to be told to sit back and enjoy the ride. I'm going to fight. I'm going to come up with plans. And if the DM has half a brain, he'll wait for a plan that he can twist to match up with his plotline ANYWAY. For instance:

Artificer: "Hah, sword. You cannot possess me in this specially prepared forge and now I shall destroy you!"

Sword: "Fool - there's only one way to destroy me, and you'll never find it! The only one who knew of it rests beneath a mountain! Muhhahahaha!".

Voila - the DM has re-railed his plot. The PC now knows that there's a way to destroy the sword, and that someone who is dead knows what it is. Alternately the sword could even slip up and outright TELL the PC how to destroy it, confident that he could never succeed at the task (ie - "Fool - I can only be destroyed in the hottest fires of the deepest layer of hell. The forge there is guarded by the strongest demons in all the universe! You'll never succeed! I'll force my next owner to dance on your grave! Muhhahahaa!")

But most importantly of all:

THE PC MATTERED. WHAT THE PC DID MADE A DIFFERENCE. It wasn't just the DM saying "and suddenly a stranger comes up to you and tells you you must go on a quest to destroy the magic artifact. When you attempt to question him, he disappears in a puff of cliche!!". The PC found out how to destroy the sword. He has a personal investment.

That only works if your last name is "the merciless" though...

Well, there's also the Third Eye of Concealment in the XPH (or Psionics section of the SRD) that acts as a continual Psionic Mind Blank. Of course, that runs for 120,000 gp.....

And if you're just trying to get rid of it you can stone to mud a section of stone, plunge the bag into it, and cast mud to stone on it. Nice easy fix to get it out of the way for a while

Update for those who wish to see... or even if they don't wish to see...

not alot has been happening... at least not in the way of dealing with the sword... last gaming session we went looking for some magic item in a town we were passing though and i found out just how much the mitheral (did i spell that right?) bars we had been hauling around with us were really worth... needless to say, we don't really need to worry too much about money... soooooooo.... if anyone has a really good idea for killing off the sword, but it sounds too expensive, feel free to throw it my way... thanks!

mitheral = mithril (spelling correction)

Ok. Destroying the evil sword.
Get a cleric with enough levels to cast Commune. Explain the situation to the deity. Ask for help.
Alternatively. Get a cleric with enough levels to cast lesser planar ally or planar ally and have him/her/it help you destroy it. Considering that it is evil, the planar ally will probably be more than glad to help.
Wait a while until the party wizard has enough levels to cast wish, djinni summoning or limited wish. Use your imagination and pray that the DM isn't in a rat-bastard mood. :]

With the amount of coin you can get from a mithril bar (eee. you guys are in the money there :)) you can probably afford one of those options.
Hope that helps.
